Unit Description

The First Alliance BattleMech Regiment - sometimes referred to as the First Alliance BattleMech Regiment (Light) - was one of five BattleMech regiments to exist within the military command of the Outworlds Alliance during the Reunification War.

History

Formation

The 1st Alliance BattleMech Regiment began forming in the early 2570s, following the decision by Outworlds Alliance President Grigori Avellar to create the Outworlds Alliance Militia in response to the increasing likelihood of the Star League invading or annexing the Outworlds Alliance. This was responsible in turn for First Lord Ian Cameron issuing Directive 21, a directive that supposedly tasked Star League and supporting Draconis Combine forces with garrisoning three worlds within the Outworlds Alliance to reduce "pirate activity" in the frontier, but which was in fact an attempt to identify and remove the growing BattleMech numbers within the Outworlds Alliance.

Initially equipped with whatever BattleMechs the Alliance could buy, the 1st Alliance lances consisted of outdated BattleMechs and converted WorkMechs, but by the eve of the Star League invasion of the Alliance the 1st Alliance had replaced its WorkMechs with BattleMechs manufactured in the Draconis Combine and procured with the covert assistance of the Federated Suns.

In the years between 2571 and 2581, military recruitment from within the Outworlds Alliance was extremely low, and the OAM was forced to rely on recruiting foreigners. This would change after events in the first year of the war, but by the time the war began, the 1st Alliance BattleMech Regiment consisted of four full battalions of 'Mechs, largely crewed by foreign-born troops with military experience.

Reunification War

Although the 1st Alliance was the first BattleMech regiment to form within the Outworlds Alliance Militia, the regiment was a regiment in name only; in practice, it was a mish-mash provisional organization, and unlike the BattleMech regiments that formed within the OAM in later years of the war, the 1st Alliance wouldn't fight at battalion or regiment strength. Instead, elements of the 1st Alliance were distributed around worlds within the Alliance, acting in support of the local militia forces or the various Alliance Armored Divisions.

Two companies of the 1st Alliance fought in support of the 4th Armored Division on Sevon when the world was invaded in October 2581. Other contingents of the 1st Alliance fought in support of militia forces and the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions on Kazanka, Nexus Ri and Zlatousi against Draconis Combine regiments,

Although Historical: Reunification War contains some detail on the 1st Alliance BattleMech Regiment it doesn't specify any major battles the regiment was involved in, and instead devotes word count to the other major BattleMech forces such as the Pitcairn Legion, Santiago Carabiniers and Alliance Borderers. Based on the information available, it's likely that elements of the 1st Alliance acted in support of the four Alliance Armored Divisions in the various battles they fought, but isn't stated clearly. The 1st Alliance entry within the Outworlds Alliance Front deployment tables on p. 140 - 141 of Historical: Reunification War is blank.
