History[edit]

First Succession War[edit]

The Fortieth Marik Militia was one of a dozen regiments of the Marik Militia to be raised in the period between the eruption of the Amaris Civil War in 2765[1] and the onset of the First Succession War in 2786. The Fortieth was stationed on Gomeisa in 2786 and by 2821 they were on Elnath.[2]

The Fortieth was one of the regiments of the Marik Militia that took part in Captain-General Kenyon Marik's famous "path to Sarna" offensive in the opening stages of the First Succession War. Operating alongside the Thirty-ninth Marik Militia, the Fortieth landed on Old Kentucky in May 2787, acting as the initial landing party of what was planned to be a large-scale invasion. Intelligence reports indicated that the Eighth Liao Lancers were in place as the local garrison, but the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth discovered that all the major military bases on the planet had been emptied, and that their only opponents consisted of small, conventional security forces.[3]

Following the easy capture of Old Kentucky, the Fortieth were redeployed in July 2787; operating alongside another regiment and escorted by three Free Worlds League Navy WarShips, the Fortieth landed on Chamdo. The security forces on Chamdo had abandoned the planet, and the local government panicked when the FWLM forces landed, surrendering immediately amidst frantic negotiations for leniency from the invading forces.[4]

From Chamdo, the Fortieth was redeployed to Wazan in September 2787, after the Twenty-second and Thirty-seventh Marik Militias found themselves struggling to maintain control of the system in the face of determined resistance from the Eighth Liao Lancers, significant numbers of whom had survived a hellish battle at the industrial city of Asuwayda and dispersed into the local resistance cells. It took until November for the combined Militia regiments to quash the bulk of the resistance cells and effectively wipe out the Lancers.[4]

The Fortieth were preparing to redeploy again when the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces launched dramatic ambushes at both Corey and Wazan; a Capellan naval task force led by the Black Lion-class battlecruiser CCS Zulfiqar jumped into the system and engaged the FWLN task force escorting the Militia regiments. The Atreus-class battleship FWLS Ragusa was destroyed, as were her escorts, the Lola-class destroyers FWLS Minsck and FWLS Warsaw, although they did manage to cripple the Capellan destroyer CCS Khalzan. Trapped on Wazan, and unaware that the Maskirovka had cracked the current FWLM ciphers, the Fortieth and the other regiments on Wazan requested additional naval support and instructions.[4]

The Fortieth would be stuck under the Capellan naval blockade of Wazan for more than a year, as the New Delos Massacre and the subsequent atrocities at Calloway VI made the war between the League and the Confederation considerably nastier and more personal for all involved. It wasn't until the large-scale ground and naval battle at Calloway VI that cost the life of Chancellor Barbara Liao that the Capellan military strength in the region was eroded enough that the League could break the blockades at Corey and Wazan and free the Fortieth and the other pinned regiments up for further offensive actions against the Confederation.[5]

Second Succession War[edit]

By 2830 the Fortieth had been rebuilt and were stationed on Castor. They were destroyed during the fighting of the Second Succession War.[6]

Jihad[edit]

The Foriteth Marik Militia was rebuilt following the end of the Jihad out of the remnants of the Stewart Home Guard after it was shattered by the Republic of the Sphere. The Fortieth's new commander, son of the Home Guard's commander Virginia Nash, allowed feelings of rage and hatred for the Republic to fester and approached Duke Leonard Stewart for sponsorship in 3082. Due to concerns that the Fortieth Militia would launch an unsanctioned attack on the Republic, Captain-General Corinne Marik stationed the unit on Marik under the watch of the Second Marik Militia while simultaneously cutting off the Fortieth's supplies. Despite this, applications for the Fortieth Militia continued to flood in and Duke Stewart's direct support of the unit allowed it to persist through the Captain-General's sanctions.[7]
