History[edit]

The Fourth Assault Guards was a BattleMech reserve regiment in the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery.[1] In March 3030 elements of the Fourth Assault Guards were deployed on Caldrea, a world in the Orestes Cluster that the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces were attempting to capture. Caldrea was the location of both a major DCMS naval base and an important industrial facility, and the LCAF believed that capturing Caldrea would give them control over the other worlds within the cluster. The Lyran command staff decided that the key to capturing the Caldrean capital city of Narve would be seizing the small town of Trothas located on the outskirts of the Narve, and with that capture give the overall offensive some necessary momentum they believed it needed to break the DCMS. Intelligence provided by the Lyran G2 intelligence staff indicated that Narve was defended by a small militia force predominantly equipped with aging lightweight Stinger and Wasp BattleMechs, and so the LCAF tasked the Gray Death Legion mercenary unit with capturing Narve. Acting on the intelligence provided to them, the Legion deployed two lances to capture Narve in the early hours of the 15th of March, only to discover that the intelligence was incorrect - Narve was actually defended two short lances from the Fourth Assault Guards - a total of seven 'Mechs, five of which were heavy designs.[2] Despite the faulty intelligence the Legion forces managed to fight the Fourth Assault Guards 'Mechs to a standstill, but the experience led the Commanding Officer of the Gray Death Legion, Grayson Carlyle, to amend the Legion's hiring policies to ensure that the senior Legion officer on the ground always had the authority to override orders from the Legion's employer.[1]
