Planetary History[edit]

Bluford was settled at some point during or shortly before the Age of War.[3][4]

Star League era[edit]

The success of Count William Reese, who made his name and fortune by entering tontines with smokers, set off a global wave of interest in gambling activities in the twenty-seventh century. There was a twenty-two year period when everyone born was entered into a tontine by the planetary government, which was referred to as a "Life Lottery." By the end of the century, backlash began when problems with the system had become evident, and a movement to ban tontines developed. It was never successful, however, as it spawned the Bluford Gambling Association counter-movement which protested any attempts to infringe on the rights of people to gamble with their lives.[30]

FedCom Civil War[edit]

In 3062, Count Josiah Reese supported Katherine Steiner-Davion as the rightful ruler of the Federated Commonwealth. A portion of the Bluford Militia rebelled against this decision including the CO William Bacchelaut's childhood friend Michael Otis.[31] Bacchelaut commanded the remainder of the loyalist militia in an operation to eliminate the rebel forces.

After the rebellion was put down, Bacchelaut was promoted to colonel and given command of the planetary militia.[32]

Geography[edit]

The soil of Bluford's smallest, easternmost continent was, at least between the early twenty-sixth century through the early thirty-first century, ideally suited for growing a strain of tobacco that was deadlier and more addictive than any previously known strain.[30]
