The Brockway system was home to at least one habitable world, Brockway IV, and as of 3145 was located in the Taurian Concordat.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

Brockway is located near the Desolate Plains and Mithron systems[4][5] and consists of a class K7IV primary orbited by at least four worlds. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the nadir jump point.[1]

System History[edit]

The Brockway system was settled at some point during or shortly before the Age of War.[4]

Planetary History[edit]

Though Brockway has a harsh, rugged environment that would normally cause colonists to bypass the world the presence of rich mineral resources and ores brought miners to the system. After they landed the colonists discovered that the plants and animals that lived here were excellent sources of nutrition. Commercial agricultural operations soon began, and exports of Brockway's foodstuffs enabled colonization of several nearby worlds that were otherwise marginal.[1]

Brockway was originally a world held by the Taurian Concordat, but the Federated Suns occupied it during the Reunification War. For centuries afterwards, the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns used the world as the cornerstone of their defense against Taurian aggression. Persistent rumors suggested that the AFFS and DMI placed a listening post on the world.[1] During the FedCom Civil War, it was also the site of several conflicts between the Eleventh Avalon Hussars and components of the Lexington Combat Group.

The Reunification War[edit]

Like the majority of the Taurian Concordat systems, Brockway was conquered by the Star League Defense Force during the Reunification War campaign against the Concordat, which the SLDF dubbed Operation BULL RUN. Brockway was spared the immense death toll and destruction that many other Taurian worlds suffered, however; this was due to General Lord Damien Onaga having replaced Field Marshal Amos Forlough as the overall Commanding Officer of the SLDF units deployed on BULL RUN in 2590. Onaga's approach to conquering Brockway saw him deliberately rotating troops[9] from I Corps and XI Corps[52] in and out of battle, giving them an opportunity to blood themselves, while limiting his campaign to purely military targets, rather than cities and civilian infrastructure. This made the conquest of Brockway a slower campaign than many previous planetary assaults, but inflicted far less damage, and with much of the planetary garrison having already been stripped away by the Taurian Defense Force to fight in other systems during earlier years of the war, the battle for Brockway was over by the end of November 2590.[9] The only major TDF unit on Brockway when the SLDF arrived, the Seventy-fourth Concordat Chasseurs, were destroyed by the SLDF during the invasion.[53]

The Jihad[edit]

In response to the asteroid bombardment of Taurus and evidence that implicated the Federated Suns, the Taurian Concordat launched a second invasion of the Federated Suns during the Jihad. Brockway was an early target, captured during late June 3074. The Taurian conquest of Brockway involved using nuclear weapons against AFFS pickets, as did the campaigns on Bromhead and Midale, resulting in more than ten million Federated Suns civilian and military deaths.[43][44]

The Dark Age[edit]

In 3119, Brockway was raided by pirates. The pirates first target was the Monterey-Lapland viaduct, the twenty-kilometer infrastructure link between the Lapland Archipelago and the rest of the continent; destroying a section of the viaduct left those elements of the Pleiades Hussars who had been engaged in wargames on the Archipelago cut off from the mainland so far as the pirates knew. Believing they now had freedom of movement, the pirates then began looting the Monterey spaceport in a relaxed fashion, failing to establish a viable security perimeter as they did so.[50]

What the pirates didn't know was that the Pleiades Hussars had access to two lances of Lamprey Transport Helicopters; the first notice the pirates had of the presence of the Lampreys was when the eight VTOLs flew over the spaceport, deploying squads of battle armor via combat drops and attacking every pirate BattleMech they could see with SRM volleys. It took the Hussars' infantry ten minutes to capture the pirate DropShip and begin turning its guns on the pirate forces as well.[50]

The pirates retreated into the hills around Monterey, attempting to use the thick forests for cover; the two lances of Lampreys worked in tandem, one lance deploying conventional infantry while the other harassed the pirate forces; the airmobile infantry herded the pirates towards a box canyon, where they were comprehensively destroyed. One lance of pirate 'Mechs was destroyed, while another was salvaged by the Hussars—who lost no Lampreys in the action.[50]

Notes[edit]

The identify of the garrison on Brockway was given as the 64th Concordat Chasseurs on a map depicted on page 64 of Historical: Reunification War;[63] however, no such unit appears in the unit tables for the Taurian Defense Force published later in the book, which lists the garrison as the 74th Concordat Chasseurs.[53]
