History[edit]

Donald Trent was a Major in the 5th FedCom RCT. Early in the War of 3039 Halstead Station was taken by the green 5th FedCom RCT supported by a unit of the Fighting Urukhai. After the Fifth took the world they began constructing elaborate bunker systems and ammunition dumps on the icy world.[1] In August 3039, the DCMS responded by sending the 1st Sword of Light and 7th Sword of Light regiments to the system. There the First pinned the Fifth in place, while the Seventh landed behind them. The experienced Kuritan forces began to grind the green Fifth FedCom between them. A battalion of MechWarrior under the command of Major Donald Trent chose to desert, seized four Union-class DropShips and an Invader-class JumpShip, and subsequently established themselves as a mercenary unit named the Outlaws in service to the Free Rasalhague Republic.[2] The remainder of the Fifth was able to break contact with the elite Sword of Light regiments when the Urukhai regiment slammed into the Sword's flank.[3]

His unit would continue to be known as the Outlaws for over a decade, and garrisoned the world of The Edge on the Periphery border of the Republic until the arrival of forces from Clan Wolf in March 3050. The Outlaws found themselves facing elements of the 16th Battle Cluster on the Plains of Torneträsk in what the Outlaws intended to be a set-piece battle, but which instead turned into a rout that saw just two companies of Outlaw forces escape.[2]

The Outlaw forces retreated to Rodigo, but in May 3050 found themselves facing forces from Clan Wolf again, with similar consequences; the few battered survivors of the Outlaws were forced to fall back again, this time to Memmingen. Unlike the retreat to Rodigo, the Outlaws were able to replace some of their losses and rest on Memmingen, although a lack of HPG communications left their employers under the impression that the Outlaws had been destroyed.[2]

The Free Rasalhague Republic world of Memmingen saw both the Black Omen and Outlaws mercenary units arrive in 3050, badly battered at the hands of Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Wolf during the initial stages of Operation Revival, the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere. The two mercenary units ended up forming a temporary alliance as they rebuilt on Memmingen; the wisdom of this was proved when Clan Wolf forces jumped into the Memmingen system in November 3051.[2][4]

In the bidding to determine who would attack the planet Star Colonel Marcos Radick managed to beat out Khan Natasha Kerensky, albeit with a dangerously low bid: just Trinary Command, Alpha Assault Nova and Alpha Fighter Star of the 37th Striker Cluster would be taking on the 3rd Drakøns, the two combined mercenary units (equivalent in strength to four companies) and the 1st Memmingen Armored Division. Star Colonel Marcos Radick chose land his forces far from the Drakøns' position and conduct a highly mobile campaign. While his strategy was successful, defeating the enemy at Vegas Greens, Danton, Quass and Pissurn Drive, the enemy always managed to slip away before a decisive defeat could be inflicted on them.[4] It was also during this campaign that the mercenaries managed to overrun a Wolf supply cache; this cache brought them not just some much-needed supplies, but also four second-line Clan warriors, a Highlander IIC and a Warhammer IIC.[2]

Star Colonel Marcos Radick's patience abruptly ran out when the Drakøns managed to escape again after the battle of Danton. In a fury he ordered the village and its neighbor Greenvale razed to the ground, killing hundreds of civilians. Fearing for the safety of the rest of the populace the Drakøns and surviving remnants of the armored division escaped offworld to Satalice, but not before broadcasting a warning to the Star Colonel that they would make him pay for his actions.[4] The Outlaws' commanding officer, Major Donald Trent, was advised by the Drakøns about the situation and in response ordered his unit to retreat as well. While the unit managed to escape to Ueda, Major Trent was killed in action just after issuing the retreat order.[2]
