The Fourth Lyran Guards Division was one of six operational divisions active within the Lyran Guards brigade during the Star League era.[1]

History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

The origin of the Fourth Lyran Guards Division and her assorted sister divisions lay in the sheer size of the Lyran Guards brigade. The largest brigade within the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces during the Star League era[1] - and possibly the Age of War and the early Succession Wars - the Lyran Guards was the only brigade to have a series of permanently staffed headquarters established between the regimental and brigade levels. The original divisional structure called for each division to be responsible for ten regiments, but this practice came to include those regiments struck from the rolls over the history of the Lyran Guards. By 2765 only one division had a full ten active regiments under its command: the First.[1]

Originally established as the divisional headquarters for the Thirty-first through Fortieth Lyran Guards regiments, by the mid-twenty-eighth century the number of regiments commanded by the Fourth had dwindled to just five and the Fourth was the second-smallest of the Divisions to remain active after the disbandment of the Sixth Lyran Guards Division. A significant factor in the sharply reduced strength of the Fourth was the loss of two regiments during Operation CATALOG.[1] Operation CATALOG was a major operation to investigate and destroy a huge interstellar cartel or collection of supercartels particularly active in the border regions of the Commonwealth abutting the Free Worlds League and Rim Worlds Republic, and identified widespread corruption, bribery and criminal activity across numerous worlds and involving a number of companies, planetary governments and military units.[2] The investigations conducted as a part of Operation CATALOG uncovered that two of the regiments within the Fourth - the Thirty-first and Thirty-ninth Lyran Guards - were so riddled with criminals and criminal elements that the LCAF High Command took the unusual step of disbanding the two regiments completely, striking them from the rolls of the Lyran Guards and reducing the strength of the Fourth from seven active regiments to five in a single stroke.[1]

During this era the Lyran Guards lacked any particular political ties - either regional or familial - unlike other brigades and formations; commonly assigned to garrison postings, the regiments of the Lyran Guards were postings of choice for those who wanted to work for the Commonwealth without either regional loyalties or particular ambitions. This led to the Lyran Guards Divisions being manned by soldiers who were professional, but without the close-knit ties found in more parochial regiments. The LCAF was intent on generating more camaraderie and esprit de corps amongst the Lyran Guards regiments, but with little success by 2765.[1]
