I Am Jade Falcon, by Robert Thurston, covers the investigation of a conspiracy within Clan Jade Falcon's scientist caste by the aging Falcon warrior Joanna. Its final chapters are set during the Refusal War and intertwine with events of the novel Bred for War.

The front page shows Joanna after killing Natasha Kerensky in the Great Gash on Twycross.

The novel was made available on BattleCorps on 6 March 2010 as a PDF file (text only, without cover, pictures, or any other interior artwork except for the usual BattleCorps frame graphics). The PDF copy includes a disclaimer stating that it was created from a pre-final edition text that might differ from the printed version and that canon-wise, the print edition trumps the PDF edition.

From the back cover[edit]

For years, Star Commander Joanna has had to live with the shame of the Jade Falcon defeat at Twycross, and the nightmares of the heroic Aidan Pryde flaunting his bloodname in her face.

Now, with the arrival of the new Star Colonel Ravill Pryde, who will lead them against the Wolf Clan, Joanna must once again fight for her chance to recapture the glory of her victory at Tukayyid. But will her advanced age, bring her to defeat again, or will being a Jade Falcon be enough for her to take on the legendary Black Widow in a repeat battle at the Great Gash on Twycross.

Summary[edit]

This novel is a continuation from the Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy. It follows Mechwarriors Johanna, Horse and Diana as they interact with new members of the falcon guard in the period after the battle of Tukkayid, in the run up to the Refusal war.

The novel starts with Johanna being characteristically harsh with some new mechwarriors, who all seem a bit off.

She is then introduced to her new commander. Ravil Pryde, who she deems to inexperienced to be a blood named warrior, and the two do not get along.

Johanna is then tasked to serve with a solahma unit as a spy trying to uncover a plot by the scientist caste. This is an excellent exploration of the third line clan units that are often spoken off with disgust, and the living conditions and morale matches expectations completely.

Johanna succeeds in her clandestine mission and makes it back to the falcon guard in time to take part in the fourth battle of twycross.

Here Johanna makes her name in the rememberance with an epic clash against another aged warrior. Natasha Kerensky. It is a somewhat lopsided fight in terms of equipment, Natasha in a Daishi, and Johanna in a Summoner. Johanna relishes the thought of fighting such a prominent foe. They both go down swinging, but Natasha never gets back up. This is the effective conclusion of Bred for War.
