The Ironfin Tuna was a species of genetically-modified fish found on Brownsville.[1]
Description[edit]
The ironfin tuna was one of many species introduced to the waters of Brownsville during or after the terraforming of the planet by the Terran Hegemony, having been slightly genetically modified to allow it to survive in the seas and oceans, which were rich in heavy metals. Capable of growing to 500 kilos when fully-grown, the ironfin tuna gained its name from the coloration given to it by the iron oxide deposited in its scales. The iron oxide and the proteins in the tuna's scales gave it a lacquered appearance, in shades of color from ochre to crimson.[1]
The filtration mechanism that gave the tuna its coloration also made it largely safe to eat, provided the bodyparts where the bulk of the heavy metals were deposited during it life - the gills, kidneys and scales - were removed. During the Star League era the ironfin tuna was popular both for sport fishing and for commercial exploitation.[1]
