The Sherwood Jabberwocky was an arboreal mammal-analogue native to Sherwood.[1]

Description[edit]

In common with the other life forms that evolved on Sherwood, the Jabberwocky resembles a Terran starfish, with five long limb-heads attached to a central body. The limb-heads have membranes between them that allow the Jabberwocky to glide through the air. An adult Jabberwocky will stretch for three meters across from tip to tip, and lives among the trees and limbs of the giant tree-like plants native to Sherwood. Jabberwockies have a mottled green and brown skin that blends into the local environment well.[1]

The Jabberwocky is the apex predator of Sherwood, a fearsome ambush predator that quickly gained a grim reputation among the human population of the planet. A Jabberwocky waits in the trees for likely prey to pass below it; when it identifies a likely target, the Jabberwocky extends its tentacles to their full length, stretching the inter-limb membranes out and glides towards its prey. The Jabberwocky falls on its prey, encompassing it and suffocating it; the limb-heads begin eating the target immediately, while it is still alive. While this is the preferred method for a Jabberwocky to hunt, the Jabberwocky can also move at speed on the ground, running on two or three of its five limb-heads, while the others attempt to grasp its chosen prey.[1]

Those who encounter a Jabberwocky consider its most disturbing trait to be that the Jabberwocky is a mimic, echoing the noises made by creatures around them, and the mouth on each of its limb-heads attempt to disorientate its prey by producing random sounds in a babble as it attacks... sounds that can resemble human speech, if the Jabberwocky has been near people.[1]

The Loxley Forest Preserve near the planetary capital city, Marion, is the region in which Jabberwockies are most likely to be encountered. The planetary militia of Sherwood, the Sherwood Jabberwockies, took its name from this species.[1]
