The colony was formed by religious separatists from Herotitus. The planet has marginal possibilities for agriculture, and it relies as much on manual labor as industrial farming techniques. When resources dwindled, civil unrest and sectarianism created social turmoil that set the planet on the path to self-destruction.[32]

Dark Age[edit]

Mandalas was colonized by the Fronc Reaches as part of a colonization program that began in 3099 following a boom in the domestic military-industrial sectors of the economy as a result of domestic and foreign policy changes by President Elaine Hadley. By 3120, Mandalas and two nearby worlds colonized as part of the same program, Appian and Tincalunas, had reached a point where they were self-sustaining agriculturally, and by 3135 each was contributing to the overall gross domestic product of the Reaches through agricultural surpluses, mining, and trade. The settlers on Mandalas originated from a mix of independent and Capellan Confederation worlds.[3]

At some point prior to 3150, the Mandalas-based manufacturing company Simcox Industrials licensed the design specifications for the JL-1 Raider BattleMech from Bannson Universal Unlimited and begun manufacturing their own design based on it.[33]
