Plot summary[edit]

On 2 February 3066, the Twelfth Dieron Regulars, deployed on Proserpina, are battered. A dozen damaged BattleMechs sit in the remains of a Zephyr-class airship in the Kennebunkport Airfield, a makeshift repair bay in an aircraft graveyard. Petty Officer Technician Terry Ohn, in charge of repairing a BLR-K3 BattleMaster, spends some of his breaks in the airship's observation deck, now home to a mother Orleans Marsh Owl and her eggs.

The Eighth Crucis Lancers, meanwhile, seek to scout the planet to determine the most effective attack route. Eunice "Mike" Michelson leads one of two recon lances sent to scout the Orleans Fen and Kennebunkport Airfield. These Federated Suns scouts begin to approach the defenseless Draconis BattleMechs, nearing the airfield on 4 February.

The Twelfth's initial plan is to load all 'Mechs into the Zephyr-class airship and demolish the hold around them, allowing their eventual recovery. Terry Ohn rushes to protest, not for the 'Mechs so much as for the owl. His quick alternative, a bluff of powering up disarmed BattleMechs to scare off the scouts, works out. The owl, saved, feeds her newly hatched young.
