Oscar Wetzel was a senior Precentor in ComStar's Com Guards.

History[edit]

Born in the Lyran Commonwealth, Oscar Wetzel would attend and graduate from the famous Nagelring as a MechWarrior, serving in the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces during the Fourth Succession War before becoming a mercenary. After ComStar hired the battalion-sized mercenary unit in which he served and subsequently absorbed it into its expanding Com Guards in 3037, Wetzel accepted a commission as an Adept and command of a Level III, steadily rising up the ranks.[1] By 3049 Wetzel held the rank of Precentor IV and command of the 201st Division.[2]

Along with the rest of the Third Army, Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht assigned Wetzel and the 201st Division to defend against Clan Jade Falcon during the Battle of Tukayyid. Defending Robyn's Crossing over the seemingly impassable Prezno River, Precentor VI Wetzel's 201st put up a stiff resistance against Clan forces, suffering heavy damage against the Falcon Guards. [3][4][5][6] [7] Wetzel's leadership and valour during the fighting against Clan Jade Falcon would earn him the Star of Honor and eventually promotion to command the Com Guards Fourth Army in 3053.[1] [8]

Oscar Wetzel was thoroughly adept at small-unit tactics, favoring a war of maneuvers over set-pieces engagements. This preference for finesse over brute force earned him the call-sign "Rapier", though many of the troops under him call him "Dueling Oscar". Precentor Wetzel would oversee the reduction of the Fourth Army down to four Divisions, was deemed enough even in the face of increased Word of Blake activity in the wake of the formation of the so-called Chaos March, but when new Precentor Martial Victor Steiner-Davion expanded the Fourth's remit to try and stop Capellan-St. Ives War from escalating, Wetzel would command the full six division Com Guard army of old.[1]

While ultimately unsuccessful, Precentor X Wetzel and the Fourth Army retained these extra troops to guard against aggression in the Chaos March, prevent mistreatment during the reintegration of the St. Ives and Liao Commonalities, and secure the ComStar funded expansion to the Ceres Metals Industries facility on Warlock.[9]
