Rahne is a small world without adequate water or growing seasons. Major dust storms fling themselves across the planet creating a need to protect exposed machinery. This has helped to hamper aboveground exploration of Rahne's gemstone and radioactive deposits. Geologists calculate that another larger planet collided with Rahne early in its life; they theorize that this collision created the planet and its moon, Caliban.

Severe weather conditions, partly from the massive moon and from the planet's one sea, continuously arise on the planet. It has four seasons: Storm, Calm, Cold, and Melting. Of the four, Melting is the most dangerous, as temperatures rise above 100° Celsius.[34] Each of these seasons last for 21 days.[1]

No one knows how native life managed to evolve on the planet. One of the creatures, the Rahne toad-fox, is typical of the animals found on the planet. During the Storm and Calm seasons, it only comes out at night. It uses its foot-long ears and ten-inch poisonous claws to kill its prey, usually slimy rock-huggers. During the Cold season, it seeks out a mate by drumming on its chest. This attracts a female and they both bury themselves in the mountainside by digging through the rock. They live and give birth in this hole during the Melting season.

The only seasons that humans can go outside the subterranean cities are during Calm and Cold. The other seasons are too dangerous.[34] Fortunately the subterranean nature of the gems and radioactive ores allows Rahne's inhabitants to work year-round in relative safety.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

In 2405, the Free Worlds League raided Rahne; Bruce Marik, eldest son of Captain-General Peter Marik, was killed during the raid.[35]

First Succession War[edit]

During the First Succession War Rahne was the target of an offensive by the Free Worlds League Military that in 2817 saw the Star League Defense Force base on the planet crippled. One of the officers within the FWLM forces was Charles Marik, future Captain-General of the Free Worlds League.[36]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

In October 3028 the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces repositioned a number of frontline units as the Free Worlds League Military launched Operation DAGGER. One of the units repositioned were the Second Donegal Guards, who were relocated to Rahne; the LCAF strategic intent wasn't to prevent a League invasion, but rather to make invading forces pay more dearly for any gains and slow the progress of any breakthrough.[37]

- Deployed across Solaris and Rahne, the unit was at 75% strength, with 90% of their equipment featuring upgraded technology.

Geography[edit]

Rahne has three continents: Tempestia, the primary continent, and Tsunamus and Pyrammus, which are southern continents. Most settlements are located below ground.[1]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Rahne City: capital city[44]
  • New Fiji: subterranean hydroponics communes[1]
  • Pyrannus Mons: mountain range[1]
  • Shawmut Springs: subterranean city, location of Zettle Metals Incorporated[44][45]
