Redemption and Malice is a short story by Blaine Lee Pardoe. It was properly released by CGL in PDF format through a download link that was emailed out to backers of the 2019 Clan Invasion crowdfunding campaign from 28 February 2020 onwards; due to an oversight some people were able to purchase it early when the story was briefly available as a digital product on the CGL webstore on 6 February.

The story mentioned two previously unknown BattleMech designs and introduced the borrack, an alien riding beast. It also mentioned "The Clave" and, through the reveal of the main protagonist's full name at the end, suggests it to be a remnant of Clan Wolverine.

Plot summary[edit]

The 6 November 3148, nearby the city of Kensington, on planet Dichell, Halloran and Ansel, two salvagers, are visited by their neighbor Yurki King. They had just salvaged the arm of an old BattleMech, and King tells them about the arrival of a pirate band on planet, taking slaves. Halloran simpathized with him, but explained that they weren't warriors. However King, recognizing both their wounds and behavior as typical of MechWarriors, said that the pirates would attack them as well, so he asked them to help protect the planet's defenseless people. After King left, Halloran and Ansel decided to go to a nearby town to assess the situation. Four days later, both men entered Kensington. After seeing a pirate Galleon tank, they entered the bar it was parked in front of, and found several pirates terrorizing the patrons. Halloran attempted to order a drink, but the pirate leader attacked him and a fight ensued. Halloran shoot the pirate's leader in the foot, and then both men disarmed and captured the rest of them. They let them go, but took their tank and weapons. Three days later, the pirate gang, Sarah's Slammers arrived in front of Halloran and Ansel's house. With the help of some locals, both junkers had fortified their complex and were ready to defend it. The pirate leader, Sarah, negotiated with Halloran face-to-face, offering him a place in her gang if they joined them, and threatening to kill them all if they didn't. Halloran rejected her offer, and instead offered her the chance to leave the planet unharmed, after freeing all their slaves of course. She rejected his offer, and both sides prepared for a fight. Soon a fierce battle ensued. During the course of the fight, the junkers managed to down two of the pirates' three Mechs. Sarah is killed in the fight, and the rest of her gang surrenders. Six days later, they assault the pirate DropShip and free all of the slaves the pirates had taken. King thanks Halloran for his help, but is surprised to hear that Halloran and Ansel, having exposed themselves, had to abandon Dichell and rejoin their people. King points out that they will be defenseless without them, but Halloran says that they will leave them a BattleMech and two tanks to help them protect themselves. When Yurki says he doesn't even know Halloran's full name, the junker says that's true, and leaves. Not revealing that his full name was Halloran Hallis.
