History[edit]

The Davion-class destroyer Samuel Davion was a WarShip in service with the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns black water navy prior to and during the First Succession War as the FSS Samuel Davion. In May 2787, the Samuel Davion was one of three WarShips that formed the naval picket for the Clovis system in the Draconis March, operating alongside a sister ship, the FSS Reynard Davion, and the New Syrtis-class carrier FSS Midale. At the time, Clovis was the administrative capital of the Clovis Combat Region.[1]

It was in May 2787 that the Draconis Combine launched a massive invasion of the Federated Suns. The invasion was so swift and targeted communications and JumpShips so effectively that many border systems didn't have a chance to transmit warnings or alerts, leading to widespread confusion on the part of the AFFS. Three days after the initial attacks another large wave of attacks was launched by the DCMS, based around two salients; one, under the overall command of Coordinator Minoru Kurita, struck into the Clovis Combat Region, beginning with invasions of Cartago, Clovis and Olancha.[1]

The Commanding Officer of the Clovis Combat Region, Field Marshal Grover Simons, was on Clovis when the Combine invasion forces arrived in-system. The DCMS forces arrived with a formidable WarShip flotilla drawn from the Third Fleet, consisting of a pair of Samarkand-class carriers, an Aegis-class heavy cruiser and four Narukami-class destroyers. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Midale, Reynard Davion and Samuel Davion managed to tie up the Combine forces for six hours close to Clovis' lunar orbit, crippling the Narukami-class DCS Firewind and inflicting heavy damage on the carrier DCS Hagiwawa, but the loss of the Midale and the Reynard Davion effectively ended AFFS resistance in orbit. Clovis fell two weeks later, with Field Marshal Simons dying whilst trying to evacuate the surviving elements of his ground forces from the planet, leading to the collapse of the AFFS defensive line in the region.[1]

Notes[edit]

  • With the Block I Davion class only having been produced for a short period prior to the Reunification War prior to the class being retired, it is likely—but not certain—that the Samuel Davion was a Block II Davion.[2] However, a number of Block I Davions were evidently mothballed, and it was rumored that the AFFS planned to reactivate some Davion Is as part of the major rearmament program that took place during the closing decades of the Star League era,[3] so it is impossible to confirm without a canon ruling or statement whether the Reynard Davion was a Block I or Block II Davion.
