The Storm Riders were a mercenary unit employed by the Alfin Mining Corporation since ca. 3035.[1]
During the early Clan Invasion, they were deployed to recapture and garrison the unaligned periphery planet of Kore, which had previously been under the control of Alfin corporation. It was mentioned that the Storm Riders had also protected several worlds in the Inner Sphere during their history, and had worked for other clients besides Alfin Mining Corporation. [2]
Kore was overrun by Clan Steel Viper in short order in the opening stages of the Clan Invasion and the defending Kore Lancers were swept aside. The Clan frontline forces moved on, leaving only a small garrison behind. Alfin Mining Corporation sent the Storm Raider mercenary company to recapture their mining planet, and the small Clan Steel Viper garrison was vanquished in the unexpected attack (giving rise to the "Ghost of Winter" legend on Kore, allegedly the ghost of the last remaining Steel Viper warrior). They were allowed to recruit from the locals in the aftermath, and one recruit was Sturm Kintaro, son of the late Jenna Kintaro, the Kore Lancers CO who had died in the initial Clan attack.[3]
In 3060 Kore came under attack of Susie Morgraine-Ryan Pirate group. The Rider's garrison of light 'Mechs was totally destroyed, but Sturm Kintaro, the last survivor free, found a small stash of second-line Steel Viper BattleMechs and used these to begun a guerrilla war, forcing the pirates to leave the planet, despite the betrayal of Lon Volker, Storm Rider MechWarrior. Sturm was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant of the "Winter Ghosts" lance, keeping the Clan 'Mechs and adding the lance to the Storm Riders' roster. The lance was sent to another destination, in the Inner Sphere. [4]
After joining the New Belt Pirates, Lon Volker led a pirate strike team to ambush the Storm Riders, seizing Golden Boy, Sturm's Goshawk for his own.[5]
