History[edit]

Theta Galaxy's component Clusters spent much of the thirtieth century guarding Ghost Bear manufacturing and technical facilities in the Clan Homeworlds and the Inner Sphere.[1] The Galaxy also participated in the Battle of Tokasha.[2]

First Draconis Combine/Ghost Bear War[edit]

Despite being a second-line Galaxy, Theta Galaxy took an active part in the First Draconis Combine / Ghost Bear War,[3] which began in 3062 with a suicidal attack by three regiments of the Alshain Avengers against Alshain.[4] Theta took part in the assault that captured Courchevel; after the War was resolved with a Trial, the various other contested or occupied worlds were returned to their prewar affiliations, but the Ghost Bears retained Courchevel as isorla.[3] During the Dominion War the Seventeenth and the Thirtieth Provisional Garrison Clusters were also responsible for the destruction of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery's Third Ghost Regiment on Marawi.[5]

The Jihad[edit]

During the Ghost Bear campaign against the Word of Blake during the Jihad Theta Galaxy was assigned to Beta Wave,[6] which was led by Beta Galaxy.[7] After Beta Galaxy took heavy casualties during the attack on Ascella, an attack that began on the 6th of October 3075[8][9] and which went badly enough to be considered a debacle, Theta Galaxy was moved from a supporting role to an offensive role.[6]

Moore[edit]

The first attack launched by Theta Galaxy was against the world of Moore on the 21st of July 3076;[10][11] Theta performed poorly during the campaign, taking heavier losses than would be expected.[6]

Pike[edit]

Theta Galaxy assaulted Pike IV in September 3076;[10][11] while the attack on Moore had gone poorly, the Pike IV campaign was an even poorer showing on Theta's part. Of particular concern to the Dominion Council was the destruction of the Seventh Phalanx, which was lost after elements of the Thirtieth Provisional Garrison Cluster refused to come to the assistance of the Seventh.[6]

The Dark Age[edit]

Theta Galaxy had to be extensively rebuilt after the Jihad, a process made more complicated with the transfer of the Third Bear Regulars into Omega Galaxy, and as a consequence three Clusters from Sigma Galaxy were transferred into Theta while Sigma was being disbanded to help Theta rebuild. Also pulled into Theta were elements of Pi Galaxy, which was also being disbanded,[12] also transferred into Theta as a complete unit was the Fifty-sixth Provisional Garrison Cluster[13] from Xi Galaxy,[14] another disbanding Galaxy, leaving the Seventeenth Provisional Garrison Cluster as the only unit still serving in Theta that had been within Theta before the Jihad.[13]

Theta returned to being a strong defensive formation, but it wouldn't be long before the various elements of Theta were tested; in the case of the Seventeenth, the DCMS launched an attack on Sheliak, only to be rebuffed by the Seventeenth. The Seventeenth's defense of Sheliak wasn't only successful - their defense of the population was highly public, and became a propaganda coup for the Cluster.[12]

The Seventeenth PGC was far more fortunate than the Tenth Phalanx, which was stationed on Goito when a pirate band backed by the Blakists launched a raid in an attempt to capture Clan technology. The pirates struck at the Dominion's Kappa-4 facility[12] in 3080,[15] only discovering that they were a diversion when Blakist insurgents detonated a nuclear device that destroyed the bulk of the pirates, elements of the Tenth and the manufacturing facility[12] as a part of the Bloody Tricentennial attacks.[15] The Ghost Bear Watch spent the following month hunting down all of the surviving insurgents.[12]

In 3145 Theta was stationed along the Dominion's border with the Draconis Combine's Albiero Prefecture. Until the Blackout Theta's Clusters were largely equipped with tanks and other support vehicles. After the Blackout new 'Mechs and equipment were shipped to Theta. Despite upgrading their Clusters, Theta refused to relinquish their tanks and other support vehicles, instead choosing to keep these forces in the Galaxy. These oversized Clusters allowed Theta to function very well in the defensive roles of a Garrison Galaxy, but limited their offensive potential.[16]

Tactics[edit]

As Theta has been primarily used in defensive postings, they have developed defensive tactics. One favored trick is the "smash and grab," where a fast-approaching enemy is lured into a target area, then surrounded by Bear warriors. The 7th Phalanx was a relatively new addition to Theta in 3061, and had not been integrated with the rest of the Galaxy yet.[1]
