History[edit]

Formation[edit]

The unit was formed to support the invasion of the Magistracy of Canopus during the Reunification War in 2581.[1] In their long history the unit led many planetary assaults with their trademark orbital drops to surprise the opponent. During the beginning of the thirty-first century the command field many assault machines and also several lances of LAMs.

Reunification War[edit]

During the Reunification War, the Third Fusiliers and their sister regiments had become known as brigades, although they still operated at regiment strength; as a result, records of their deeds during the various campaigns of the war record the Third Fusiliers as the Third Fusiliers of Oriente Brigade. The Third Fusiliers served as a part of the First Marik Auxiliary Corps commanded by General Ian Marik in support of the SLDF Task Force Canopus.[2][3]

Tetski[edit]

The first campaign that the Third Fusiliers took part in was one of the most famous of the Canopian theater: the invasion of Tetski. This heavily industrialized world was one of the most rimward Magistracy colonies and the site of some of the most extensive BattleMech repair facilities in the nation. As an important cog in the MAF war machine, battalions and regiments of Canopian troops were regularly rotated through Tetski for repair and refit and the system was one of the few worlds other than Canopus to merit a permanent naval WarShip picket. The invasion force consisted of two elements; the first was two battalions of the First Marik Militia, who were tasked with distracting the planetary garrison, and the second element consisted of the SLDF VII Corps' Fifty-eighth Brigade, the Fifth Marik Militia and the Third Fusiliers, who would land after the First Marik Militia to capitalize on the distraction already caused.[3][4][5]

The First landed a week ahead of the other invading forces and fought a highly mobile campaign to draw the defending Third Canopian Light Horse away from their prepared defenses. The Third Fusiliers jumped in-system via a pirate point alongside the Fifty-eighth Brigade and the Fifth Marik Militia on the 10th of January 2583, a week after the arrival of the First Marik Militia as a combined SLDF and FWLM WarShip flotilla tore through the defending Magistracy WarShips. The Third Light Horse made a cross-country race towards the capital city of Tokhai, arriving inside the city defenses just as the 'Mechs of the Fifty-eighth Brigade entered the atmosphere. Unable to catch the Third Light Horse out in the open, the task force was faced with a siege against a determined foe with access to significant resources. It took three weeks for the assembled forces to push their way into the city, but even when the task force had seized the industrial, economic and political centers of the city, the Third Light Horse refused to surrender. Instead, the Canopians fought until every man was down, inflicting heavy casualties on both sides. The loss of Tetski and the facilities there was a heavy blow to the MAF war effort.[3][4][5]

Krimari & New Abilene[edit]

Following the destruction of the bulk of the Magistracy Navy at Thurrock in mid-2583 a buoyant SLDF targeted a number of worlds for conquest, picking up the pace of the Canopian war sharply as they capitalized on the inability of the MAF to redeploy units quickly. The minor Magistracy world of Krimari was one of these targets, notable largely for the presence of one of the elite Chasseurs á Cheval regiments on world. Captain-General Marion Marik tasked the Fifty-ninth Brigade with capturing the world and attempting to destroy the defending Fourth Canopian Light Horse, and assigned the Third and Fourth Fusiliers of Oriente Brigades to support the Fifty-ninth. Although the SLDF forces were unable to pin the Fourth Light Horse down, they did force them off-world and quickly occupied Krimari.[6][7][8]

Following the capture of Canopus IV in mid-2584 one of the units used in the conquest of the Magistracy capital, the 402nd Independent Regiment, was assigned alongside the Third Fusiliers to capture the world of New Abilene, a colony world on the edge of Magistracy space. As was the case on many of the Canopian worlds conquered during the closing stages of the war, the defenders on New Abilene put up only a token resistance before surrendering, despite the two-regiment task force being one of the smallest deployments made during the war. The battle for New Abilene was the last major campaign for the Third Fusiliers during the Reunification War.[6]

Anton's Revolt[edit]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

Andurien Secession[edit]

The Third Fusiliers of Oriente were raised during the Invasion of Canopus.[9] They spent time on Promised Land in 3036, and moved to Epsilon in 3038.[10]

Operation Guerrero[edit]

As an always active unit, the command was often used for their unique assault technique developed over centuries in combat against the League enemies. In two occasion the unit showed other sides of their capabilities. In 3055 it supported a sister regiment in an assault on Penobscot and calm the situation on their homeworld with force in face of a hostile militia which was under influence of the Lyrans.[9]

FedCom Civil War[edit]

The FedCom Civil War was perfectly timed for the Third Fusiliers, but the LCCC didn't authorize any operations. This led to widespread dissatisfaction within the unit, particularly from their commanding officer. The Colonel's protests were so voluminous in fact that he was called before a board of inquiry. He wasn't reprimanded, however.[11] They remained on Promised Land at this time.[12]

Jihad[edit]

The Third Fusiliers apparently faced a wide variety of intruders during the Jihad. They were present for the Regulan raids on Oriente, and faced the LCAF troops who participated in Operation BROKEN FIST. They also drove off retaliatory raids from the Capellan Confederation and Word of Blake. In 3079 they were stationed on Les Halles.[13] Late in that year they faced an assault from a Shadow Division. The Third held for hours, taking heavy losses. It looked as if they would be destroyed, but their medium assets hit the Blakist troops from the rear, and the two Oriente forces were able to force the Shadow Division off-world. They were relocated to Ventabren, both to rebuild and to bring that system into the Grand Duchy of Oriente.[14]
