Star League Era[edit]
Of the various brigades of Regulars active within the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery during the Star League era, the regiments of the Benjamin Regulars - including the Twelfth Benjamin Regulars - were considered to be the most flexible. This was a reflection of the reality that the Regulars could at any point be called on to fight against the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns, the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces or the Star League Defense Force, as a result of the Benjamin Military District bordering the Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth and Terran Hegemony. This was even acknowledged by the Internal Security Force, who gave the Twelfth and the other regiments of the Regulars more leeway than the average DCMS unit - an attitude the Benjamin Regulars repaid by limiting complaints and criticism to supply issues and local concerns, rather than anything to do with politics.[1]
Bandit raids in or around 2765 had inflicted sufficiently heavy damage on the Twelfth that the regiment was still rebuilding, causing the ISF to downgrade the Regulars reliability rating; it was anticipated that the Twelfth wouldn't finish rebuilding until some time in [[2766].[1]
In November 2785[2] the Twelfth Benjamin Regulars and the Seventh Proserpina Hussars invaded the Lyran Commonwealth world of Gram, swiftly conquering it. Gram had until recently been protected by the Fifth Donegal Guards, but false-flag raids by DCMS units on Bone-Norman, Barcelona and Somerset had persuaded the Lyran General of the Armies, Paul Steiner, to redeploy more Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces units to the Periphery border in case the raids were indications of either resurgent Rim Worlds Republic forces or a potential invasion from the Combine. As a result, the Fifth Donegal Guards had been redeployed away from Gram, shortly ahead of the arrival of the Twelfth and Seventh. The planetary militia's infantry and armor were swiftly decimated by the lighter elements of the DCMS forces.[3]
