This is from the Classic BattleTech Forums. Since those pages get archived/purged every so often, I thought it would be a good idea to have a copy here. Tigress Gunship Fuel Question was posted by Wrangler. Revanche referred to it on the DropShip Infobox talk page.

Title: Tigress Gunship fuel Question

Post by: Wrangler on 10 Jan, 2010, 18:56:35 pm

Hi everyone

I have question. Was there a update to the PDF for the Major Periphery States?

Someone telling me that the Tigress Close Patrol Craft only uses like 0.101 tons per day verse my original pdf that says 8.15 per day.

Fluff has this thing doing week patrols.  I've hadn't heard of 150 ton craft only using 0.101 fuel.  Does anyone have updated PDF that could answer this question?

Thanks

Don't but if they're using less than one G of thrust, or not using thrust at all time that could be accurate. No reason to let the pirates know you're coming...

Are you sure you're reading that correctly? My copy of HB:MPS says, "Fuel: 15 tons (1,200 points/8.15 burn days)"

That means it has 15 tons of fuel. In tactical operation, 15 tons gives it 1200 fuel points to a 150-ton small craft (and any aerospace fighter). In strategic operation, a 150-ton small craft (and any military DropShip) uses 1.84 tons of fuel per G-burn-day, which means the Tigress can sustain 1G for 8.15 days. For rules on that, see AT2R pages 51 and 63, or Tech Manual pg186.

At no point does the Tigress uses 0.101 tons per day or 8.15 tons per day. In strategic mode, it uses 1.84 tons per day per G of acceleration.

Mine is reading ways your does, Cray.  Someone else is telling me the 0.101 thing.  Since i'm kinda bad about going battlecorp and updating my PDFs i've gotten. I didn't know if there was update.  I like double checking.  Thanks for clearification.

Someone else is telling me the 0.101 thing.

0.101 doesn't fit any BT fuel consumption value for a small craft.

He responded saying he mis-read it, breaking the 8.15 ton ratio down further. It was odd to me.

Thanks for responding verybad.  That's what I would figure. Tigress operates in the week long patrols in asteroid field.
To me, the fuel consumption seem excessive. 15 tons total fuel, with 8.5 fuel burn, means your going be out fuel in less than day and half... If go through it literally.  I have read deeply into SO rulebook, I'm not sure if you can simply shut engines down and coast for while.    Unless the fuel consumption is keeping the ship's fusion reactor operating normal basis on top of the thrust.

No, you're not going through it literally.

What Strategic Operations says (see my prior page reference) is that a 150-ton small craft uses 1.84 tons per day it spends accelerating at 1G. Therefore, 15 tons of fuel will allow a 150-ton small craft to accelerate at 1G for 8.15 days.

The Tigress never uses 8.5 or 8.15 tons of fuel per day.

Yes, you can turn off the engines. You can always turn off engines whenever you need to. Search Strategic Operations for incidences of the word "coasting." At a minimum, see the rules on pg259.

You only spend significant amounts of fuel in a spaceship when it expends thrust points. Otherwise, consumption is in terms of milligrams per day.

*sigh* I miss read burn per-day thing quitely. It burns 8.15 points of fuel per day vs tons.   Sarna has mis-label by mistake. Thank you very much for clearing this up.

No, it does not. It burns 1.84 tons per day. That means 15 tons of fuel lasts 8.15 days.

Sorry for the late post but I just found this. Just to be clear:

The Tigress' 15 tons of fuel = 1200 fuel points, which means that it gets 80 points of fuel per ton.
A burn-day = 24 continuous hours of operation at 1G thrust.
For every burn day, the Tigress will consume 1.84 tons of fuel, which is 147.2 fuel points.

So after 1 burn day of operation, the Tigress will have (15.0-1.84=) 13.16 tons of fuel or (1200-147.2=) 1052.8 fuel points remaining.

The 8.15 days of fuel is found by dividing 15 tons by 1.84 tons per day, or (15/1.84=8.15).

Right?

It gets 80 points of fuel per ton in tactical fuel consumption mode (i.e., during combat and, ideally, takeoff and landing).

Correct. The full term is a burn-day-G or something like that, and you can accelerate at more or less than 1G. "Burn-day" is a term only used in strategic fuel consumption mode.

Quote
For every burn day, the Tigress will consume 1.84 tons of fuel, which is 147.2 fuel points.

For every 1G burn-day in strategic mode, the Tigress will consume 1.84 tons of fuel. As you noted, this would leave a topped-off Tigress with 13.16 tons of fuel.

If the Tigress then switched to tactical mode at that point then, yes, is would have 13.16 x 80 = 1052.8 fuel points.

Quote
The 8.15 days of fuel is found by dividing 15 tons by 1.84 tons per day, or (15/1.84=8.15).

Correct.

Thanks! This clears it right up. (And I don't have Strategic Ops, which is why I was confusing the points/tons.)
