Welcome[edit]

Welcome, Amaroq Starwind, to BattleTechWiki!

We look forward to your contributions and want to help you get off to a good strong start. Hopefully you will soon join the army of BattleTech Editors! If you need help formatting the pages, visit the manual of style. For general questions go to the Help section or the FAQ. If you can't find your answer there, please ask an Admin.

Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

  • For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
  • Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
  • If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
  • If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
  • Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Amaroq Starwind" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
    • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
  • For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
  • Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
  • In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

Again, welcome to Sarna's BattleTechWiki!

Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) image[edit]

Hi, I wanted to explain why I deleted the Mad Cat image that you uploaded and included in the Mad Cat article gallery:

  • According to Policy:Images, Sarna is no image repository, i.e. images should not be uploaded just for showing them in a gallery. The image you uploaded, while impressive, does not contain any significant visual information that isn't already conveyed by other images. As such, it's superflous for this wiki's purpose.
  • In this particular case, the image being superflous has further ramnifications: It precludes fair use. Keep in mind that the image is somebody else's work and thus copyrighted. Uploading the image to Sarna is a copyright violation. In certain cases, namely if there is a valid reason why the wiki should be using this particular image, there is the fair use doctrine that allows the use of the image nonetheless. But, like I said, it doesn't apply if there is no reason to have this image. Uploading it just to have it boils down to copyright violation.
  • Our Policy:Canon stipulates that the Sarna BattleTechWiki seeks to (only) include material from official sources. Not all officially produced material is considered canon for BattleTech, but in any case, unofficial fan art does not usually qualify. And the image in question is not an official BattleTech image, it is fan art.
  • Our Policy:Fanon mirrors this by stating that Sarna BTW does not publish fan fiction, including fan art.

I hope you understand why I had to delete the image. I hope this doesn't deter you from contributing further. Frabby (talk) 00:54, 4 September 2014 (PDT)

non-canon user tag[edit]

Hey Amaroq, Editing another users profile page is generally considered as something that is not done around here so I just wanted to come and apologise for editing yours, but I felt that the non-canon tag placed on your profile meant that your profile showed up in places it should not.--Dmon (talk) 09:10, 10 December 2017 (EST)

MechLoader[edit]

Hey,

I am curious about your MechLoader project, Is it intended to be a TRO style document you are going to release as a PDF or is the plan to incorporate everything into said video game? Dmon (talk) 07:38, 15 March 2018 (EDT)

MechLaborer, actually. And it's gonna be a bit of both, starting with the XTRO: Heavy Industry (and a short section about the lives of MechLaborers, and various reasons they might have chosen that line of work), and then (hopefully) becoming a video game at some point.

It actually started out as a joke between my BattleTech-playing friends, one I came up with actually, but thanks to autism I end up taking that sort of stuff very seriously once I actually give it some thought.

I was thinking that one idea for a parody trailer, it could be a gameplay montage using existing MechWarrior music, but just showing various IndustrialMechs going about various activities (including some PoliceMech action). Imagine the Bitching Betty from MechWarrior 3 squaking at you while you're cutting down trees, saying "Warning" every time one is about to fall on you and stuff.

Since it's not likely that I'll actually be able to make the videogame anytime soon, I'm going to start with the XTRO-style document.

Non-canon weapons[edit]

Hey, From what I can tell the Rail gun and Flamer Array are Non-canon. They are part of unofficial mods to the MechCommander game. As such they should not be included in articles about canon weapons. I have noticed you are very interested in the non-canon portions of the wiki in general. There is a special seperate wiki we moved most of the material too several years ago if you use google.Dmon (talk) 09:10, 19 March 2018 (EDT)

  • The Railgun actually appeared in the base MechCommander and MechCommander Gold before it appeared in the MechCommander 2 mod you're referring to. I apologize for adding those bits of information on canon articles, I just felt that they might be relevant (similarly to how Wikipedia often has links to related articles). I have actually been on BattleTech Fanon Wiki before, but that place is an absolute mess, since many articles on there constantly reference (and try to shortcut to) information that wasn't properly migrated from over here (leading to dead links as a result). While we're on the subject, though, I do hope you enjoyed reading my article on BTFW about Clan Afterlife!

Quick Addendum[edit]

The information about the Flamer Array in MechCommander 2 was already present on the Flamer page before I edited it, and I do feel that removing the bit of information about real-world railguns and coilguns was a tad unnecessary. Maybe remove the bit about the apocryphal weapon, but at least keep the real-world stuff, man! Amaroq Dricaldari (talk) 09:23, 19 March 2018 (EDT)

Sorry for being harsh, as you has noticed the Fanon wiki is a mess, many years ago this wiki was a hot mess of canon and fan made stuff too, as a result mysef and a few others are quite strict on not letting to much leak back in. We are happy to let it be know that this non-canon stuff exists but it needs to be restricted to its own article and no further. There are exceptions to this where things fall into the Apocryphal category like the strange weapons from the MechAssault game. If the Rail Gun is actually in MCG then I apologise, feel free to add that information into the MC article and even create one for the weapon itself as that is an official source and not fan made. Dmon (talk) 09:44, 19 March 2018 (EDT)
There was already a Rail Gun article at some point, but it got deleted in 2011...

Amaroq Dricaldari (talk) 09:50, 19 March 2018 (EDT)

It was around 2011/2012 that all the non-canon stuff was purged so it may or may not of been about the MC version of the weapon. --Dmon (talk) 10:02, 19 March 2018 (EDT)

Categories[edit]

Yo man, Dmon again,

Just want to ask if you think all the new categories are needed. Specifically stuff like the Dark Age Advanced Weapons and Prototype Weapons, Could become redundant as time goes on or is just simply a bit of an oddity such specific DA tag (appart from reference to actual product) as it is now part of the main timeline, these item will likely still exist in what ever ther ilclan era will be called. Dmon (talk) 11:31, 21 March 2018 (EDT)

In the same vein, I think the Category:Mech Killers is superfluous and misleading; and I'm not convinced why we need a MWO 'Mech category when the list is in the article.
However, this is as good a place as any to point out that you're a great contributor. We appreciate your input. Don't let a few friendly corrections dishearten you! :) Frabby (talk) 16:42, 21 March 2018 (EDT)

Staying on team and being creative[edit]

[Moved conversation from Small Pulse Laser talk page] ~Amaroq Starwind~ (talk) 13:44, 24 March 2018 (EDT)

Seriously do not think this kind of thing is what the talk pages are for man. There are plenty of forums on the internet for this kind of stuff, 110% not wiki information what so ever.--Dmon (talk) 13:49, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
Maybe I shouldn't be on Sarna then, because I tend to give out advice (or come up with ideas) often when talking about games like this. Can't really help it sometimes. ~Amaroq Starwind~ (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
It is not a case of maybe you should not be on Sarna, some of the stuff you have done has been brilliant, some in need of tweeking to keep on topic but still good, and you have kicked me in the pants to do a reorganisation of the Video Game section I have been putting off for about a year. Unfortunately your biggest strength seems to be your greatest weakness in that you want to add your own touch on the universe. Sarna is not about adding to the universe it is about cataloging what is already in it. Are you a member of the official battletech forums or even the Sarna ones?--Dmon (talk) 17:37, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
Neg. I was (until last night) a member of an unofficial BattleTech group on Telegram, and I am also a member of a forum called Space Battles, where people write fan-fiction for various science fiction settings, quite frequently including BattleTech (and the occasional crossover. User:Jimmy the Tulip wrote a Doctor Who and BattleTech crossover). ~Amaroq Starwind~ (talk) 18:00, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
I admit I am not familiar with any of those. Over on the Official BattleTech forums I think you would like it because there are a few thousand members and there are whole sub-sections dedicated to custom weapons, custom units and fan-fiction and there are people who love it. Another really good place if you have Facebook is a group called BattleTech - International that people would give you about a hundred answers to any question you ask and debate theories until the cows come home. As for contributing to the wiki, I feel that you must think I am a right A**, at no point is that what I want or do I wish for you to leave. But on the other hand if you look at a lot of the talk pages we debate a lot of things quite regularly as to the best approach. With the size of the wiki a lot of active editors keep a list of projects and even an update list of what they are currently working on. Maybe consider doing that, spell out to us what you want to achieve and your ideas for what you want/feel you can contribute to make Sarna more useful to everybody. Work with us and be part of the team. You are obviously into the weapons and stats, are you into minis? Do you read the fiction? Dmon (talk) 18:27, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
I am not into the miniatures as much as I am interested in the fiction and the actual gameplay side of things. I actually got introduced to BattleTech through MechCommander Gold, MechCommander 2, MechWarrior 4, and (ironically) Robotech, all of which were extremely prominent in my childhood. The way I see it, the actual tabletop aspect of BattleTech is only part of something that would occur quite regularly in a larger RPG campaign, using a mix of BattleTech Tabletop and BattleTech RPG mechanics.~Amaroq Starwind~ (talk) 20:43, 24 March 2018 (EDT)

Hey Amaroq, I have just been reviewing your recent edits and would like to congratulate you on how muchyou have turned yourself around and are now helping to improve the wiki in ways that are useful and insightful. As a sign of my appreciation I would like to present you your first award. Random Act of Appreciation Award, 1st Ribbon.--Dmon (talk) 05:03, 19 April 2018 (EDT)
