User talk:Jimmy the Tulip

  • Dude, no worries: I've seen you've made some good calls on corrs already. Do *whatever* you feel like doing. But definitely bring in some of your stories, too! --Revanche (admin) 23:18, 12 November 2006 (CST)
  • Thanks for the compliment. I have been workign on the designs for a while, 3025 was a real hard one. I had a big run on getting things done in the designs when I was out of work with a herniated disc for a couple of weeks, couldnt work at work so I had to do something. That and I have an interest in the technology of the game and its fiction as well. I havent had a chance to read your fiction yet but Im sure I will soon and Im glad to have you on the BatleMech project.--CJKeys 23:28, 13 November 2006 (CST)
  • Welcome! It's great to have the additional help! Nicjansma 01:39, 14 November 2006 (CST)

Fiction[edit]

  • Yeah, I've just made a couple of basic grammatical corrections at the moment.

As for my fiction most of it is kind of New Star-centric so doesn't completely fit within the CBT canon 'verse. I'm gonna write some new stuff to post here. Jimmy the Tulip

Great! Even your New Star fiction rings as being BT-related. Maybe its not the easiest stuff for non-New Stellarians (New Starites, New Starians...?) to grasp right away, but the intent of the stories are clear. Hint: on the edit field, when you're done writing something and want to 'sign' it, click on the 2nd button on the right, which looks like a Q and some script. Doing that actomatically inserts the wiki code necessary to sign and date-stamp your post. --Revanche (admin) 17:30, 13 November 2006 (CST)
Ok, well I'm more than happy for it to go up here. I don't have the original Word Docs (on a CD at home somewhere) so it's probably best to copy and paste it over from New Star. I'm in the process of writing a CBT fan fic set during the Reunification War so will have some "legit" stuff to post soon. ;)
  • I've made my first fairly substantial change to an entry, BTW. the Planet Cerberus now has historical Information added. Let me know if the format or the positioning is wrong so I know for next time. :)Jimmy the Tulip
I saw, and when it comes to the planetary files, almost nothing has been done by anyone. That means...you're setting the style. I looked over it and added a few links (years, names, planets & events (like treaties) are always good to link to, even if no articles yet exist for those items). I'd recommend taking out the preceeding years (like 2583) that you have in front of the paragraphs. They exist within the text, so don't really need to stand out. If you want to add links just add [[ ]] around the item you want linked. That automatically sets the code for the linked article. --Revanche (admin) 18:36, 13 November 2006 (CST)

Project BattleMechs[edit]

Hi, I have been given a userbar for everyone who is working on BattleTechWiki:Project BattleMechs and I wanted to give you your userbar so that you could be recognized for one of the ways you help the community here at Battletech Wiki. I know that with time, and alot of spell checking and paitence, the BattleMech project will get done and it will help to make Bettletechwiki the premier source for information from 'Mechs to personalities. I hope that you can continue to help wherever you can on the project to make it the best that it can be.

BTW PMBattleMechs.jpg Place this userbar on your userpage as a member and contributor to the BattleTechWiki:Project BattleMechs so that anyone who stops by your userpage will know that you are a member of the project.

I appreciate what you do for the project and I appreciate what you do for Battletechwiki overall with your fiction. --CJKeys 07:20, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Thanks, CJ. I appreciate being allowed to take part in such a great project as this wiki and am happy to offer as much help as is needed. Being able to write and share my fiction with the world at large is a fantastic bonus. :) --Jimmy the Tulip 14:11, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Drafting Your Kiwi Assets[edit]

  • Hey, JtT: I'd like to draft you as a lead on an on-going project. I've been working on the policies that wikipedia employs and adapting them for use here. As I anticipate the BTW community growing, we need a to have a framework established that allows for the resolutions of differences (which is a constant battle at wikipedia). We're not gonna be avoiding the problem, if we grow as big as I think we can. But, if we prepare a framework now, then it'll appear to be a lot smoother when they do poke up. So, even though I'm still working on the policies themselves, I'd like to share what I've got so-far. Can you please read through BattleTechWiki:Resolving disputes. I'd like you to play the part of first Advocate (there's a really cool userbar that comes with the position of Advocate!). I'm still working on the Advocacy article, but essentially you'd be brought in to help explain someone's position in a disagreement about an article. You wouldn't be necessarily taking sides, but helping someone who feels like he's not expressing himself well and could probably sway understanding if he had someone explain it for him. Its an important first step in preventing edit wars. Would you be interested in helping start up and form the Advocates Corps? --Revanche (admin) 12:17, 20 November 2006 (CST)
Wow. That sounds like fun. Kinda the UN of BTW, only more effective. Yeah, I'd consider it a priviledge to help out with this. --Jimmy the Tulip 14:13, 20 November 2006 (CST)
Great! I'll get back to you once I punch out a Advocates page, and then you can take over and shape its mission. Thanks! --Revanche (admin) 16:01, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Project: Planets[edit]

  • JtT, please go to Template:ProjectPlanets and scroll thru the 6 histories with the picture examples. Let me know which one you like best, or upload one of your own. --Revanche (admin) 01:35, 22 November 2006 (CST)
I've built the Project now, but I'm waiting on a userbar set from Skuggi (for your members) and your input as to the talk page template icon. Take a look at BattleTechWiki:Project Planets (not yet advertised). --Revanche (admin) 11:15, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Sorry, the talk page template icon? What input do you need form me, appearance?
Sorry, should have provided more information. The talk page template was an idea that CJKeys & I came up with to help adevrtise that there are teams working to develop & maintain a status-quo for various article types. The icon is the picture that appears in the left side of the project template, that quickly identifies the team (a 'Mech for Project: BattleMechs). --Revanche (admin) 22:59, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Looked over the page. It looks good. I guess now I need to start setting some goals, etc. I'll look over the other Project pages here to get some inspiration as to what I want here.
As for the 6 histories I'm leaning towards 2 or 3 at the moment, though I might find an icon of a Terran-like world and see how that looks also. How do I upload images here? --Jimmy the Tulip 16:39, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Uploading: near the bottom of the sidebar is a link to upload files. You can also access the gallery, to see other images already uploaded, by clicking on Special pages, also near the Upload files link. Look for gallery on that resulting page. Just paste the image you want to appear into the templates image section (just the image file name to replace the image name I have in there), automatically resized to 25 pixels, IIRC. --Revanche (admin) 22:59, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Hey, the Lead Userbar is ready for your review:
BTW PLPlanets.jpg.
Does that pass muster for you? --Revanche (admin) 18:46, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Whoa, that rocks! I'm guessing that's another of Skuggi's works? Great job, I love it!!! I've read through all of the above and will see what I can do. I'll holler if I have trouble. :) --Jimmy the Tulip 14:38, 23 November 2006 (CST)
Great! Skuggi wanted to hear if you liked it; I'll pass it on to him. Feel free to post it on your UserPage. --Revanche (admin) 15:29, 23 November 2006 (CST)

You dead? If not, take a look at {{WikiProject Planets}}, and your project itself. I gave them a makeover not too long before the Christmas break. --Xoid 02:51, 29 January 2007 (CST)

Americanized[edit]

  • Thought this was a bit funny, but maybe its something we need to address. Aiden Pryde (no relation to our New Star brother) has been correcting mis-spellings he finds in various articles. In Clans, he did fix some actual mis-spellings, but he Americanized some of your British English spellings. Any thoughts on this? --Revanche (admin) 11:18, 22 November 2006 (CST)
This is a hard one to address. You may well find that someone else will come along and re-edit them to British spellings. I have MS Word set up to americanise the spelling but my typing generally lends itself to British standards. As BTW is an international community there's not much one can do about it. In fact, if people go Americanising some Britishisms, the poster may well become a little irked.
Maybe an American standard has to be imposed (where possible and remembered) on all "canon information" pages, but with regards to fiction it should just be left alone.
What do you think? --Jimmy the Tulip 16:30, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Hmmm, passing the buck back to me...hmmm. I really don't know. I definitely agree with you on the fiction (I'm all for leaving those completely alone, unless asked to intervene by the author). Its the 'getting irked' part that concerns me. Afterall, as you said, BTW is aimed at an international community; who's to say which English is proper. I think maybe this is where we really fall back on 'community consensus' and see where it goes. If you have no issue with Aiden Pryde's alterations, then the consenus (of two) is that corrections from British to American is acceptable. If you don't think he should, I urge you to address the issue on the talk page by putting out what you think the answer is, see if you get any responses, develop a plan based upon those responses (avoiding the voting urge) and then implement it for Clans. I'd then suggest seeking out the appropriate document policies here and referencing that consensus decision there (i.e., lending it the force of policy). If no one responds to call for discussion (after a reasonable amount of time), then you also have consensus. One last thing: you you do decide to take it up for discussion, be sure to invite Aiden Pryde on his talk page. (Alternative: research the issue at Wikipedia, see what their consensus is.) --Revanche (admin) 19:15, 22 November 2006 (CST)
"who's to say which English is proper"? Why, the English, of course! Might I direct you fine gentleman towards these two pages here and here? American English, to my chagrin, is the defacto standard because it's what the Chinese consider correct. China + America = too many people to argue with. --Xoid 02:22, 23 November 2006 (CST)
China + America = too many people to argue with. Not something the browncoats woulda said (Firefly reference). Funny stuff...--Revanche (admin) 05:14, 23 November 2006 (CST)
I'm really not concerned with my spelling being corrected from British to American english. As I said, I think for the canon references it probably should be Americanised anyway. That's how all the canon Fasa and FanPro stuff is written so the community at large should follow that as a pre-determined consensus. I just think it's good that Aiden Pryde is taking the time to do it. Consistency throughout all the articles will make the whole wiki flow better, IMO. :) --Jimmy the Tulip 14:44, 23 November 2006 (CST)
And...consensus is achieved! --Revanche (admin) 15:26, 23 November 2006 (CST)

Inner Sphere Mechs are Done[edit]

After working on this for around seven months I am proud to announce that all of the mainstream Inner Sphere 'Mechs that have a TRO entry are finished. I know as the game goes on this will be a continuing process but now we are oficially ahead of the curve on the Inner Sphere 'Mechs and Im sure the Clan 'Mechs wont take too long. The Solaris VII 'Mechs are a creature unto themselves and once I actually buy Map Pack Solaris VII I will start working on those as I have already scanned images for them. I would like to congratulate the whole team. Without everyone here we woudlnt have ever gotten this far. So dont be suprised if you also get this on each of your discussion pages.CJKeys 00:55, 19 May 2007 (CDT)
