History[edit]

Willard Drygulch Dix was one of those who served in the Seventeenth Recon Regiment, also known as Camacho's Caballeros, and was one of those on active duty with the Caballeros in 3056 when they were employed by Chandrasekhar Kurita to provide security for one of his companies, Hachiman Taro Enterprises. Willard was born on Galisteo, and was a tall, rangy hillbilly with blond hair. While each of the Southwest Trinity worlds had its own population of hillbillies, those from Galisteo were particularly prone to being considered slow-witted, even by their Cowboy brethren, and Willard's drawling, deliberate speech patterns fed into that image, although in his case, assuming he met the sterotypes would've been a profound mistake.[1]

A Staff Sergeant at the time of the contract on Hachiman, Willard was one of the scouts who fought alongside Lieutenant Junior Grade Cassie Suthorn during the attack by Word of Blake terrorists on the main HTE compound in Masamori, the planetary capital of Hachiman, on the 15th of October 3056. Willard was also one of those Caballeros who witnessed the death of Captain Juan Pedro O'Rourke, who was gunned down in midair after ejecting from his overheated Phoenix Hawk.[1]

On the 2nd of November 3056, the Seventeenth Recon were battling the Ninth Ghost regiment in Masamori as a result of orders from the Internal Security Force, who believed that Chandrasekhar Kurita was betraying the Draconis Combine to the Clans. Willard was one of the fifteen volunteers who formed the squad led by Lieutenant Cassie Suthorn to penetrate the building occupied by Ninyu Kerai Indrahar, the adoptive son of ISF chief Subhash Indrahar and senior ISF operative on Hachiman, and present him with (fabricated) evidence exonerating Chandrasekhar Kurita. With a battle raging on the streets outside, Willard was responsible for making sure Cassie didn't lose focus on the mission, in favor of trying to take down some of the Ghost 'Mechs.[2]

During the battle to get to the tower penthouse and face Ninyu, Dix took at least one injury - a small arms hit to the body[3] - but despite his injury was one of the last two scouts who entered the building alongside Cassie to make it to the penthouse entrance. He and the other survivor, an even taller scout named Mangum, guarded the entrance to the penthouse from DEST troops as Cassie negotiated with Ninyu.[4]
