The Ashio system is the location of at least one inhabited world, Ashio III, and as at 3145 is located in the Ashio Prefecture of the Dieron Military District within the Draconis Combine.[4][5]

System Description

The Ashio system is located near the Albalii and Piedmont systems[4][5] and consists of a class G6IV primary orbited by eight worlds, the third of which is habitable.[1][2][3]

Ashio III

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Ashio III - more commonly known simply as Ashio - is the third planet in the Ashio system and has served as the Prefecture capital of the Ashio Prefecture within the Draconis Combine for much of its history. Ashio has three moons named Hyde, Kauner and Rossi.[3]

Planetary History

Early History

The colonists who settled on Ashio were able to raise the planetary economy above subsistence level by ranching the native mammoth species, which resembled an elephant-sized cow and which could be farmed for meat that was almost indistinguishable from Terran beef. Over time, Ashio became one of the most prolific beef-exporting planets in the Inner Sphere.[3]

Star League

During the final years of the Star League, Ashio was host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[6]

Succession Wars

Ashio served as the Prefecture capital of the Ashio Prefecture for much of its history while the planet was still affiliated with the Draconis Combine. The Combine constructed Ashio University on the planet prior to the First Succession War, an institute that served as a political and military college and which counted a number of members of the Kurita family during its history. The first Ashio University was destroyed during the First Succession War, but was rebuilt by the Combine government as a part of the People's Reconstruction Effort during that brief rebuilding program. Having been rebuilt, the University was subsequently destroyed again; the second incarnation of the university was destroyed by a fire, which was believed to have been started deliberately by anti-Kuritan insurgents.[3]

Ashio University was rebuilt for a third time, with the third incarnation lasting into the Dark Age, dedicated to studies relating to culture and the earth sciences and based out of the planetary capital city, Iscariot.[3]

Civil War & Jihad

In the thirty-first century Ashio served as the capital of the Ashio Prefecture; the planet benefitted from a significant level of infrastructure geared towards acting as a logistical and command hub for the prefecture, as well as modest levels of agricultural, manufacturing and mining. Ashio was occupied by foreign troops twice between 3060 and 3080; during the FedCom Civil War troops from the Draconis March of the Federated Commonwealth occupied the planet, and later during the Jihad the Word of Blake took control of the planet. These two occupations saw the industrial and urban sectors of Ashio take damage, but that damage was relatively mild compared to many other planets and the bulk of the rebuilding needed had been completed by 3079. The largely agrarian portions of the planet managed to escape both occupations almost unscathed.[2]

Dark Age

During the Dark Age the Geological Institute of Ashio announced that movement had been detected along one of the three major fault lines that converged under Vesuvius Prime, the continent that was home to a massive volcano named Mount Vesuvius Major. The volcano and fault lines had been inactive throughout the preceding centuries and mining industries had developed on Vesuvius Prime to extract the various minerals and ores present as a consequence of earlier geological activity, but the announcement by the GIA led to the mining industries gradually moving away from Vesuvius Prime.[3]

Geography

The continents on Ashio are named Rhodesia, Vesuvius Prime and Zaire.[1][2] Ashio is a young planet, and as such has high mountains and deep oceans; all three continents are mountainous, as are the handful of island chains dotted around the sufrace of the planet. Ashio has relatively modest deposits of minerals and the amount of arable land available is limited, but it is home to extremely large mammoths native to the planet. The mammoths resemble cattle, but are elephant-sized.[3]

The single most distinct geological feature on Ashio is Mount Vesuvius Major, a ten-kilometer-tall volcano located on the continent of Vesuvius Prime, which may be the largest volcano in the Inner Sphere. Mount Vesuvius Major dominates the landscape of the southern continent of Vesuvius Prime and sits at crux of three major fault lines, which have been inactive for the majority of Ashio's settled history.[3] By 3025 scientists estimated that if Vesuvius Major erupted, it could block all sunlight from the planet, sending it into an ice age.[44]

The continent of Zaire is located in the northern hemisphere of Ashio, while Rhodesia is located to the northeast of Zaire.[3]

Planetary Locations

  • Ashio University: an institute of higher learning that had been destroyed no less than three times by the thirty-second century, with the third incarnation of the University being located in the city of Iscariot.[3]
  • The Geological Institute of Ashio: an institute of higher learning located in Shigata and affiliated with Ashio University.[3]
  • Iscariot: the planetary capital city, located on Rhodesia.[3]
  • Shigata: a large city located in southern Zaire.[3]
