The Border Protectorate was a member state of the Free Worlds League from the Third Succession War until its incorporation into the Word of Blake Protectorate in June 3070.

While its member worlds had a long history in connection with the League, the province itself was only established at some point during the Third Succession War. This was due to these planets' location close to the border with the Lyran Commonwealth, ensuring that they shifted from one nation to another frequently. By 3014 the Border Protectorate consisted of two worlds, Alula Australis and Zosma, though ComStar's report on House Marik erroneously claimed that Lyran-controlled Denebola was also a member of the Protectorate. [1] [2] [3]

The Border Protectorate was ruled by a military dictatorship who, along with its appointed MPs in the League Parliament, were staunch supporters of House Marik and hostilities against House Steiner, though the general public tended to feel otherwise. During the Marik Civil War the Protectorate was solidly behind Janos Marik, but an upsurge in Lyran attacks forced its loyal troops to remain on the border rather than assist anti-rebel efforts.[3] [4]

During the Fourth Succession War the Border Protectorate was among the League worlds abandoned to a combined Lyran-Tikonov counteroffensive following Operation DAGGER's failure. The province's native military - the Protectorate Guard - were among the FWLM forces withdrawn and spent the next two decades "in exile" until the chance came to liberate their homeworlds.[5] [6] [7]

That chance would come in 3057 during Operation GUERRERO when the province's worlds were among those regained by the League. By 3067 the grateful Border Protectorate was one of Captain-General Thomas Marik's strongest supporters in Parliament.[8]

During the Word of Blake Jihad the government and military on both Border Protectorate worlds joined the Blakists' own Protectorate in late June 3070, effectively ending the province's existence.[9]
