The Canopian Highlanders were a mercenary unit that formed after the Reunification War.

History

Early History

Founded after the Reunification War, the unit remained in the service of the Magistracy of Canopus for the next few centuries.[1]

Andurien Secession

The Canopian Highlanders were two battalions strong at the time of the Andurien Secession; one of the battalions, Long's Light Lancers, were stationed on Brixtana, whilst the other, MacGraw's Marauders, were stationed on Luxen. In 3030 the Highlanders were one of the Canopian commands involved in the invasion of the Capellan Confederation launched by the Magistracy and their allies, the Duchy of Andurien. The Light Lancers saw combat on Jacomarie, taking light damage, and would remain on Jacomarie or Turin until their recall to Brixtana in 3034.[2] The campaign on Jacomarie left a mark on the Lancers; the planetary militia refused repeated calls to surrender, forcing the Lancers to hunt them down one at a time. The extent to which the militia was determined to resist left the Lancers with grave concerns about the level of determination a line regiment or Warrior House would display in combat.[3]

MacGraw's Marauders had a rather more ignominious war; formed originally from refugees from the Rim Worlds Republic, the Marauders shared the Lancers' distase for Spheroids. This became obvious in the aftermath of the capture of Sax in December 3030; although the local militia was quicly overwhelmed, resistance on the planet continued in the form of terrorist acts, bombings and sniper attacks, even after the planetary government had surrendered. The Marauders responded to the constant harassment in a brutal fashion; for every Canopian trooper killed, the Marauders rounded up a dozen members of the local population and executed them. This brought a swift reprimand from the Canopian High Command, and the Marauders were reassigned to the planet Andarmax, but their actions had transformed Sax into a hotbed of determined resistance.[4]

The Marauders remained on Andarmax until a Capellan counter-offensive hit the world in August 3034. Also stationed on Andarmax were the Magistracy Militia and a small mercenary unit hired to perform cadre duties, the Killer Bees. The Capellan counterattack saw Andarmax hit by Kamakura's Hussars and Rob's Renegades, otherwise known as the Fifth McCarron's Armored Cavalry.[5] Ordered to resist by the Magistracy high command, the Killer Bees invoked a clause in their contract that stipulated that they couldn't be ordered to take actions that would result in disproportionate damage to the unit, and broke contract. The Renegades allowed the Killer Bees to depart unmolested; by the time the Bees left, the Marauders were engaged in heavy battles around Andarmax's capital city while the Militia were trying to fall back into prepared positions in the Alamance Wastes.[6] The Marauders took heavy damage against the Renegades and were reduced to a shadow of themselves before retreating from Andarmax two days after the Killer Bees departed. The unfortunate Magistracy Militia wasn't as lucky.[5]

Late Succession Wars

For a short time they signed a contract with the Federated Commonwealth in exchange for equipment upgrades, but the Davionists didn't stand by their word. The Highlanders returned to their home state and during the next years the command defended several planets against bandit raiders. Tragedy struck the force in 3067 after a successful bombing attempt against the unit's senior staff. The force behind the assassination was a group of three different pirate bands.[1]

Jihad

During the Jihad, the unit defended the Magistracy. By 3079, the Canopian Highlanders had survived the Jihad and formally merged with the Magistracy Armed Forces.[7] They became the third unit of the Magistracy Highlanders brigade, and were stationed on Cate's Hold and Brixtana.[8]

In 3085 the regiment had assembled all its units on Cate's Hold. The unit had also rebuilt to within 20% of its nominal strength.[9]

The Dark Age

The Canopian Highlanders were effectively destroyed on Cate's Hold in 3101 when a well-equipped pirate group hit the Highlanders with a nuclear weapon. The few survivors of the Canopian Highlanders joined the First Magistracy Highlanders.[10]
