The Cor Caroli system was home to at least one habitable world, Cor Caroli II, and as of 3145 was located in the Wolf Empire.[2][3]

System Description

The Cor Caroli system is located near the Alioth and Mizar systems[2][3] and is a binary star system with a hot A0VI-class Subdwarf star and a much cooler F0V class star. The planets and asteroid belt orbit the cooler star. The dwarf star is nearly 680 AU away from the inhabitable worlds, but even over that great distance the electromagnetic radiation it emits interrupts communications and interferes with navigation systems.[1]

System History

The Cor Caroli system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus and was a member of the Federation of Skye prior to the formation of the Lyran Commonwealth in the mid-twenty-fourth century.[4]

Cor Caroli II

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Cor Caroli II - more commonly known simply as Cor Caroli - is the second planet in the system and, like the other planets in this binary system, orbits the F0V-class star.[1]

Planetary History

The initial settlers were interested in the vast stores of minerals and metal ores available both on Cor Caroli itself and in the asteroid belt. Unfortunately these plans were interrupted when several nickel-iron asteroids were sent to the planet via Mass Driver. The computations used to plot the course of the asteroids were incorrect, and these asteroids landed on the planet's surface. These impacts destroyed several cities and launched a great deal of ash, dirt, and other planetary material into the atmosphere, creating a "limited nuclear winter" that lasted for several decades.[1]

Despite this setback Cor Caroli continued to attract new settlers. By the time of the Star League Cor Caroli was jointly overseen by the Lyran Commonwealth and Terran Hegemony. Both nations had corporations that held operations on the world. After the fall of the Star League the world became part of the Lyran Commonwealth. The Free Worlds League and Draconis Combine raided the world many times during the Succession Wars, but the mining operations continued to produce. Repairs and rebuilding to the plants kept them functioning, albeit at a lower rate. By 2950 however, nearly one-fifth (20%) of the mining operations production had been permanently lost.[1]

Cor Caroli was annexed non-violently by the Word of Blake during the Jihad and incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate by the 1st of August 3068,[5] Having occupied Cor Caroli, the Blakists largely ignored the planet because of the great distance between the jump points and Cor caroli.[1] Cor Caroli was the first target of the Lyran portion of Operation SCOUR, the invasion of the Protectorate by the allied coalition. Under the command of Duke Robert Kelswa-Steiner allied forces invaded Cor Caroli on the 21st of January 3077 and liberated the world in less than a week.[6] The allied coalition forces assigned to the attack on Cor Caroli consisted of the Skye Guards, the First Crucis Lancers and the Seventh Free Worlds Legionnaires; Duke Kelswa-Steiner's campaign involved the Guards and the Lancers attacking the Blakist forces head on outside the city of Manovota, with the Legionnaires providing cover. The Blakists retreated after taking approximately twenty percent losses, with losses climbing up to fifty percent in subsequent skirmishes. Down to half strength, the Word forces evacuated Cor Caroli, leaving the planet in coalition hands after only a week. A victorious news broadcast covering the liberation of Cor Caroli was issued by Myra Kellison of Tharkad Media Associates.[7]

In contrast with many Blakist-occupied worlds Cor Caroli was almost undamaged at the end of the Jihad, and in 3081 the Lyran Alliance ceded the world to the Republic of the Sphere.[1]

Geography

Cor Caroli has four major continents named Carboniri, Ferrini, Nikallini and Pluribi. The Carboniri continent suffered a number of asteroid impacts soon after the planet was colonised as a result of misjudged orbital mining efforts. The continents of carboniri and Ferrini are in the northern hemisphere, Carboniri in the northeast and Ferrini in the northwest. Nikallini lies in the southern hemisphere, while Puribi is at the south pole.[1]

Planetary Locations

  • Corriolas: the planetary capital city, located on Ferrini.[1]
  • Manovota: site of a major battle during Operation SCOUR.[7]
  • Maureen: the largest icty on Nikallini and location of the headquarters of the Caroli Mining Corporation, the largest mining corporation active in the system in the thirty-second century.[1]
