The basis of the future Rubinsky's Renegades, Grover's Heavy Guard was a mercenary unit active during the Clan Invasion era.[1] [2] [3]

Grover's Heavy Guard was a mercenary company employed by the Draconis Combine in the late 3050's, with the unit's commander Captain Grover Anderson securing a high-paying contract that ceded all Clan-tech salvage rights to the Combine. As of March 3057 the Heavy Guard were stationed on Burton, setting off to raid a supply depot on Clan Smoke Jaguar-held Port Arthur defended by the 168th Garrison Cluster. Despite being a veteran commander, Captain Anderson dangerously underestimated the threat of even second-line Clan troops despite the warnings of newly recruited MechWarrior Maxophilia Rubinsky.[1] [2] [3]
Ignoring Rubinsky's advice, Anderson ordered Grover's Heavy Guards to attack the Jaguars head-on, walking the unit straight into the waiting guns of a Smoke Jaguar Binary. Compounding his grave error, Anderson ordered concentrated fire in response, freeing the Jaguars from the Zellbrigen who promptly responded by returning concentrated fire, Anderson's Cyclops the first to be downed. When the Heavy's Guards executive officer faltered, Maxophilia Rubinsky took command, having already prepared a strategic retreat to the more defensible position in the foothills of the Ironcast Mountains. Aware that the mountains negated much of the Clans superior range was their singular hope, the nerve-wracking four-hour long cat-and-mouse battle of close-quarters and point-blank melee combat resulted in only six Heavy Guard BattleMechs surviving, but ensured the complete defeat of the Binary.[1] [2] [3]
Returning to Combine space, few believed the survivor's tale of successfully defeating the Clan forces though they gladly took every scrap of salvage the Heavy Guards returned with to Burton. With the unit's CO and executive officers dead but well-paid for contract completion, from the ashes of Grover's Heavy Guard Maxophilia Rubinsky formed Rubinsky's Renegades, the new unit built around perfecting the up close and personal combat tactics that ensured their success and survivor on Port Arthur.[1] [2] [3]

- Grover's Heavy Guard boasted a Union-class DropShip capable of carrying the entire unit, following the death of unit's command staff Rubinsky's Renegades "inherited" the craft which they promptly renamed The Hive.[1] [2] [3]
