Help:CreateSystemArticle

Revision as of 04:11, 1 April 2020 by Frabby (talk | contribs)

To quickly create a system article that matches the format in use with other system articles:
(Note: Individual worlds are covered in the article about the respective system they are part of by default.)

1. Open the new article. If there is already an article with the same name as the system, then use the suffix (system) in the article name, e.g: Fistandantilus (system) (and remember to set up a disambiguation link in both articles). If there is already a system article with the same name, then use a suffix that contains the most commonly recognised abbreviation for the state in which that system has been located for the majority of its recorded history, e.g: Fistandantilus (DC) for a system that has largely been located in the Draconis Combine, Fistandantilus (HL) for a system that has largely been located in the Hanseatic League, and so on. Once again, make sure to set up disambiguation links in both articles.

2. Paste the following code into the edit field:

{{PlanetOverhaul|phase=0}}
''Note: X and Y are coordinates (light years on XY plane) relative to [[Terra]] at (0, 0)''
{{InfoBoxSystem
| image               =
| caption             =
| name                =
| coord               =
| stars               =
| class               =
| recharge            =
| recharge stations   =
| planets             =
}}

Suggested Opening Statement: "The System Name Title system is the location of the inhabited planets Planet1, Planet2, the inhabited moon Moon3 and the Industrial Satellite4 orbital facility. The system is located in the Region5 district of the FactionName6 as at Current Year."

Suggested Opening Statement: "Planet1 is the [orbital number] planet in the SystemName system [and is the regional capital of the FactionName6's Region5 district]. On the surface, the planet hosts CompanyName7's FactoryName8 industrial facility [and the summer palace of ImportantPerson9], while the Industrial Satellite4 facility orbits its moon, Moon10.

3. For any sections where there isn't any information to populate the section, comment the sections out, preferably using the format in the example below, so that future editors can maintain the common article format across all of the planet articles:

4. Here are some pointers on how the various article sections should be filled in. Remember, references should be used wherever and whenever possible, so that readers looking at the article can go back to check the primary source(s) for themselves.

  • System Name Title: The article should be named for the primary star in the system, if known; if the star name isn't known, then the article name should default to the name of the primary inhabited world, without numerals, e.g. Solaris, not Solaris VI.
  • System Description: If you know that there is at least one inhabited world in the system, then use this format: "The System Name Title system is the location of the inhabited planets Planet1, Planet2, the inhabited moon Moon3 and the Industrial Satellite4 orbital facility. The system is located in the Region5 district of the FactionName6 as at Current Year." If you don't know for certain that there's an inhabited world in the system, then it may be that the people living in the system live in a space station, in domes on an asteroid, or something else... we can't know for certain. If that's the case, then use the phrase "... is the location of at least one habitable world or construct..." instead of naming inhabited worlds.
  • System History: This provides the political climate of the system, especially that which is not world-dependent, such as when the system changed hands, space battles, fell off maps, etc., all in text form. Anything that is specific to a single inhabited world or construct in the system should go in the Planet History section below, not the system history section.
  • Political Affiliation: If you have enough information to populate a majority of the planet infobox below, then the political affiliation entries should go in the planet section below. Otherwise, put the political affiliation in here instead. Note that each entry should be cited, and that the name of a state or power should only be hotlinked the first time it appears, not in every entry.
  • Planet Name: This can (and should) differ from the name given in the Infobox if the common name for the planet differs from that of the system or infobox standard. Ex: For Terra, the InfoboxPlanetStandard planet name would be Sol III, but the Planet Name at this point in the article would be Terra.
  • Planetary History: Provides more details of major events, detailing changes in ownership, battles, major events, etc., if distinct from the system as a whole. Where planets have a detailed history, this section should be sub-divided into sub-sections with clear titles, such as Reunification War, Star League Era, Fourth Succession War, Jihad, etc.
  • Political Affiliation: In list format, reflecting those available data points that show which nation or faction the planet was affiliated with at any given point. This is included here as although it is generally the entire system that changes hands, the fate of that system is usually dependent on battles on the primary world; where there are two or more worlds within a system, this also allows the affiliation of each to be tracked seperately. In instances where the system is controlled by one faction and inhabited worlds are controlled by another, the political affiliation of the system should be recorded seperately within the system area of the article. If a precise date is not available for an event such as a dispute in ownership or a planetary conquest/annexation, it is entirely acceptable to add an entry indicating the range of years within which the world was disputed/conquered, but this should be expanded on in the history section. Ex: "2351-2352 disputed world (Sarna Supremacy/Chesterton Trade Federation)" or "Ca. 2351-2357 - Sarna Supremacy (annexed during this period)". If a system's absence from a map of the region in which that system lies is being recorded here, the affiliation should be given as "No record", to prevent absence of proof being presented as proof of absence. Ex: "2217 - No record" or "3130 - No record". If a planet or system is visible on a map but the owner is undefined, it should be listed as "Independent", unless the map predates the end of the Age of War in 2571, in which case you should use "Inhabited", unless you're certain the planet was completely independent of political affiliations.
  • Military Deployment: Lists military units deployed to the system (or world), broken down into smaller sub-sections by years of recorded note. This should be used for the defending units if the data point reflects a year in which there was a raid or invasion, not the attacking units.
  • Geography: A general description of the world in text form (no lists). This should include such details as number and name of continents as well as details of named geological features, but not man-made features such as cities and industrial plants.
  • Planetary Locations: a hierarchical list, as seen in the Luthien article. Short descriptions of each entry, unless a link is provided. Where possible, try and include some detail on which continent the location appears on.
  • Industrial Centers: This should list all known factories, including those destroyed. Construction and destruction can be indicated by year notes (similar to dates of life for a character).
  • Image gallery: Banner image (if not displayed in infobox), additional planetary images, surface maps, etc.
  • Nearby Systems (auto-generated): Details of the systems within 60 light years of the named system, in a tabular format including the name of each system and the distance in light years between the two with the systems listed in order from the closest outwards. All of the systems within 60 light years are shown. In addition, if there are less than 20 systems within 60 light years, at least the closest 20 systems are shown, and always multiples of 4 (e.g. 20, 24 or 28 systems are shown). See Aalzorg as an example. NOTE: This section is automatically generated by the BattleTechWiki:Project_Planets/Mapping -- do not edit this section manually as it will be overwritten by a bot.
  • References: This will be auto-populated, if you have set up your citations correctly.
  • Bibliography: List in bullet form the canon (or apocryphal, marked accordingly) sources mentioned in the article.
