The ranks of the Armored Forces of the Federated Suns are a combination of elements from the SLDF and the ancient British army. [1]. This hierarchy improves morale by providing a self regulating system where incompetent soldiers do not rise to positions of responsibility.
Army Rank | Insignia | Enlisted Ranks: The rank patch is placed on the right shoulder. Often referred to as Scars or Scars of the Sword [1] by the soldiers | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Private | The lowest rank for regular army members is the Private. Before getting the rank any citizen, at the age of 16, who is willing to serve the Federated Suns enters the army as a recruit. The recruit first enters boot camp on his home-world. After successful graduation the soldier serves for at least 24 months within a regular army unit.[1] | ||||
Corporal | The next highest rank is Corporal. Usually gained after 12 months of service, the only difference between corporal and private is that corporals are entitled to higher pay and a small pension which is awarded to surviving family posthumously. Soldiers with leadership skills receive training at one of the Small Unit Schools where they learn tactical basics.[2] | ||||
Sergeant | Sergeants lead squads or command vehicles. In other branches they also hold positions with responsibility. The army honor the work of the sergeants with higher payment and more freedoms. Graduates from the academies also receive this rank.[2] | ||||
Sergeant-Major | This is the highest enlisted rank for a common soldier. Only a handful of Sergeant-Majors are in every regiment. They explain the orders from the officers to their soldiers. When the soldiers have difficulty the Sergeant-Major is the first person to notice and inform the officers. Technical personnel can achieve this rank by displaying extraordinary skills. [3] | ||||
Officer Ranks: The primary duty of Officers is to secure victory against the enemies of the Federated Suns. | |||||
Cadet/Subaltern | This is the lowest rank for an officer. As a sign of their newly started army service, the Cadet has blank shoulder boards. Academy graduates hold the rank for 6 months before they can advance to Leftenant. [4] | ||||
Leftenant | This ranks commands one infantry platoon or one lance (4 vehicles) of either mechs, vehicles or artillery pieces. [5] | ||||
Captain | Captains are highly regarded by their men because the officers fight with them. Captains command a company. They are responsible for executing the plans of their superiors and, should the plan fail, to develop successful alternatives.[5] | ||||
Major | Majors command a battalion of troops. They receive orders from their superiors and also reports about the situation at the front from their subordinates. Should a plan fail, they must save as many soldier as possible while also securing the flanks of the command.[6] | ||||
Leftenant Colonel | He is often the executive officer of an entire regiment. The lite colonel is responsible for the daily administrative work, allowing the Colonel more freedom to develop new plans. During combat he commands reserve units or support commands. The naval equivalent is a Leftenant Commodore [6] | ||||
Colonel | The officer with this rank is in overall command of a regiment or a small department within the administration. He spends most of his time securing supplies for his command in face of bureaucracy. In the equivalent is Commodore.[7] | ||||
Leftenant General | A rank created with the goal to prepare the officer to handle the administrative task of larger commands. They are often part of an RCT staff and during combat command key units. [7] | ||||
Major-General | The Major-General is the Executive Officer of a March Militia. He is tasked with the coordination of several commands on several worlds at a time. In battle he leads key units. Vice Admirals are the equivalent in the navy.[8] | ||||
General | When a Major-General has proven that he can handle greater responsibilities, he receives command over an entire March Militia. He must also coordinate the supplies for the regiments under his authority. The Admiral is the naval counterpart.[8] | ||||
Marshal | Marshals are responsible for a Regimental Combat Team. They are appointed by Field Marshals after proving exceptional skills in both administration and combat command of a March Militia. In the navy a Fleet Admiral has comparable tasks. [9] | ||||
Field-Marshal | [9] | Only fourteen people currently hold the rank of Field-Marshal. Seven command specific Combat Theaters, two are responsible for the Draconis March and Capellan March respectively, and the remaining five act as advisers to the Prince. [9] | |||
Marshal of the AFFS | The official rank of the Prince of the Federated Suns. He usually dons the rank insignia of a Field-Marshall.[10] |
3062
Since the formation of the AFFC in 3048 the rank system within the army changed. It includes elements from both, the AFFS and LCAF, to form an new modern equivalent. But since the separation in two independents realms in the late 3050's. [11]

Remis III, also known as Coursadin is one of the first planets mentioned in Classic BattleTech, as the scenario for Lyndon's Company vs. the Wolf's Dragoons. Officially, the map of the Inner Sphere is considered up-to-date, with all known systems marked. However, this creates a conflict, as Remis does not appear, nor therefore does its third orbital. We know that it is along the Draconis Combine/Federated Suns border, from the info in the scenario. Conveniently, there is a system named Bergman's Planet that is along the border. Bergman's Planet may be the most well-known planet in the system, but the name of the Star should be different. It is highly likely that Bergman's Planet occupies an orbital of the Remis system, possibly the second or fourth orbital. Edeguarda (talk) 12:29, 12 July 2020 (EDT)edeguarda
