Planetary History

Third Succession War

In 2995 a revolution on Hortense saw the Baron of Hortense, Jean-Paul Grandin, sent into exile. The population of Hortense replaced Jean-Paul Grandin's rule with a democratic system of government, one which was recognized so swiftly by the Federated Suns government that no-one was left under any doubt that House Davion had sanctioned Grandin's removal from power. Grandin and his family established themselves on the nearby world of Vaucluse and began planning their return to power on Hortense, drawing on the Warriors' Cabal to create an armed force of retainers with which they intended to invade Hortense and return Jean-Paul to his rightful place. However, whilst this private army - a small unit officially entitled the "Noble Order of Saint Louis on Hortense" - undertook a number of operations on behalf of Jean-Paul's fellow Cabalists and continued to see members of those families loyal to the Grandins and who had followed them into exile serving within its ranks, the exile community itself integrated itself into the local population on Vaucluse. By the mid-thirty-first century the memories of Jean-Paul's rule on Hortense had faded, and the Grandins were more focused on various business ventures within the Crucis March than they were leading their private army on an invasion of their ancestral seat.[31]
