The Hyalite system was home to at least one habitable world, Hyalite V, and as at 3145 was located in the June Operational Area of the Periphery March within the Federated Suns.[2][3]

System Description

The Hyalite system is located near Amber Grove and Victralla systems.[4][5] The Hyalite system consists of a class A4IV primary orbited by at least five planets.[1]

System History

The Hyalite system was colonized or absorbed by the Taurian Concordat at some point before the end of the Age of War.[4][6]

Hyalite V

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Hyalite V - more commonly known simply as Hyalite - is the fifth planet in the system[1] and has a single moon, named Hyatos. During the Star League era was the site of a Star League naval headquarters with a naval repair base orbiting the moon.[7]

Planetary History

Early History

Named after a Terran semi-precious stone, Hyalite was originally settled to gain access to chemical compounds and gemstones. Most of the settlers left Hyalite after the gem deposits were exhausted, but the plentiful water supply and pleasant environment allowed those who stayed to make a good life for themselves.[1]

Reunification War

During the Reunification War the Star League Defense Force IV Corps was sent to take Hyalite. Rather than engage in a "scorched earth" policy as some SLDF commanders did, Major General Frederick Truscott instead arranged for his aerospace and WarShip assets to damage the world's infrastructure. The two divisions of IV Corps then landed and quickly seized the primary food, fuel, and water sources used by Hyalite's cities. Small commando teams then eliminated or captured political and military leaders as a propaganda campaign blanketed the world's media outlets. The Twelfth Division allowed the Second Concordat Chasseurs to strike their rear, luring the Taurian unit into a trap. The Tenth Division then sprung the trap, pinning the Second between two Star League forces. The Taurian unit tried to withdraw but sustained heavy casualties. Footage of the Second's defeat was broadcast across the world and the SLDF units remained in their garrison locations. After waiting for six weeks (to truly let the lack of supplies sink in) the SLDF units began a slow, deliberate march across Hyalite, seizing settlement after settlement. They ran into some local partisan activity, but the SLDF forces were victorious. The world was declared pacified in 2587.[8] Hyalite was annexed by the Federated Suns at the close of the Reunification War.[9]

Star League Era

Following the Reunification War, the Star League's Nineteenth Fleet maintained their fleet headquarters beneath the surface of Hyalite's airless moon, Hyatos, which was designed to withstand an orbital bombardment. In orbit around Hyatos, was the forward repair base, used by the Fifth, Eleventh and Nineteenth fleets for mid-level repairs and upgrades. Star League Intelligence Command (SLIC) also used the base as a final jumping-off point for undercover agents traveling to the Concordat.[7]

Succession Wars

Located near the Periphery edge of the Capellan March, Hyalite served the Federated Suns as a base world for counteracting Capellan and Taurian aggression. By the end of the Third Succession War the planetary economy was based on chemical industries, which exported their products to other worlds for use in various industries, particularly either the metals or pharmaceutical industries.[1]

FedCom Civil War

In 3067 the Concordat invaded Hyalite, attempting to gain control of the planet, but discovered that the population was considerably less enthusiastic to see them than the inhabitants of the Pleiades Cluster. The Third Taurian Lancers and a small mercenary command, Lennox's Light Horse, battled against forces from the Second Albion Training Cadre before the sudden departure of the Lancers back to Concordat space left the Light Horse high and dry. Despite the slaughter of civilian dependents on Bromhead by Taurian forces the month before, the Light Horse were allowed to surrender and depart after handing over the WHM-8D Warhammer piloted by the Light Horse's CO as ransom, due to their good conduct during the campaign.[10]

The Jihad

During the Jihad, in response to the asteroid bombardment of Taurus and evidence that implicated the Federated Suns, the Taurian Concordat launched a second invasion of the Federated Suns. Hyalite was an early target, captured during late June 3074.[11][12]

In February 3075 the Federated Suns launched a counter-offensive against the Taurian invasion, striking at the worlds of Hyalite, Lothair and Warren. The counter-offensive used a mix of AFFS and militia forces, backed up by the mercenary Hansen's Roughriders. The defending Gordon's Armored Cavalry were shattered when the Roughriders attacked using fuel-air bombs, and the Federated Suns quickly recaptured Hyalite as a result.[12][13] The Roughriders went on to attack the world of Amber Grove in April using a mix of nuclear and non-nuclear weapons captured from the Taurian forces on Hyalite.[12][14]

A few weeks later, the Quixote-class frigate TCS Vendetta arrived in the Hyalite system, and on the 3rd of May 3075 the Taurian WarShip launched an orbital attack on Hyalite, concentrating on the military facilities on the planet as well as the HPG compound that had been subverted by the Roughriders. This was the first of a number of orbital bombardments the Vendetta would carry out across several worlds in pursuit of the Roughriders.[15][16]
