Based C3 system, the Improved C3 Computer (frequently shortened to C3i) combines the functions of C3 Master Computer and C3 Slave Units into a single system.

Receiving the original technology via trade with the Draconis Combine triggered by Clan Invasion, when ComStar attempted to adapt the technology for use by the ComGuard's expanded equivalent of a Great House lance, the six 'Mech grouping known as a Level II, they were unable to upgrade the C3 Master computer to cope with the larger unit size, instead turning to the C3 slave units, transforming each into a mini-master computer. First produced by ComStar in 3062, the prototypes were quickly smuggled to the Word of Blake who also reverse-engineered the technology for their own similarly sized units.

Unlike a standard C3 lance where interruption or destruction of the C3 master computer brings down the network, each improved C3 unit acts as an equal partner in the network, making improved C3 networks more robust, able to survive and function despite unit losses or the effects of ECM. About half the size and weight of a master computer, each improved C3 computer is larger than a C3 slave unit. Improved C3 units also lack the TAG abilities of the Master Computer. Standard and improved C3 systems are incompatible with each other, and unlike the standard version C3i networks can not be linked together and expanded beyond the 6 unit formation.
