Kumqwat was thought to be a candidate for Obeedah, one of the Word of Blake's Hidden Five worlds following the disappearance of an Interstellar Expeditions exploration mission known as the Payton Mission in the system in 3092. This prompted a second exploratory mission, complete with WarShip support from the government of the Capellan Confederation; the second mission determined that the Payton mission had simply been lost to a navigational error that saw their JumpShip destroyed by a collision with an asteroid. Some survivors of the Payton Mission managed to survive long enough to reach the planet Kumqwat IX, but those survivors had all died by the time the second mission found them.[16]
