Planetary History

Mirfak was a hot dry world with a population of roughly 49,000 in 3028. At that point the planet had several small productive mines being worked, producing germanium and other valuable radioactive ores and the local government was attempting to establish larger, more profitable mining concerns to improve trade. The degree of security surrounding that matter suggested a substantial find somewhere in the Mirfak system. The planet had no HPG facility.[1]

When Baron Cham Kithrong elected to create the Calderon Protectorate, four worlds garrisoned by VI Corps formed the basis of the Protectorate. Mirfak was one of these worlds - and was one of the first worlds to be attacked by TDF forces loyal to the Concordat. The VI Corps elements on Mirfak were pushed offworld by October 3066, and while the Protectorate contested the Concordat control of Mirfak in 3067, the world remained a Concordat world in every practical sense.[17] The fighting on Mirfak as a result of the formation of the Protectorate cost Taurus Majoris Mining their facilities on Mirfak.[27]

On the 23rd of May 3072 forces from the Calderon Protectorate raided a number of Taurian Concordat worlds, including Mirfak.[28][29] The war between the Taurian Concordat and Federated Suns officially ended on the 2nd of July 3080 in the aftermath of Operation MATADOR, but the fortunes of the Concordat continued to decline. Many worlds, lacking confidence in the Concordat's central government, seceded from the Concordat; Tyrrhenia was the first of the Concordat worlds to do so,[30] leaving the Concordat even before the Jihad had begun, along with the world of Hellespont soon after.[10][18] Between mid-3079 and late 3085 six more worlds seceded: Argos, Carthage, Carvajal, Celano, Micros III and Mirfak, and the governor of Charleston was debating declaring Charleston independent as well. Where the Taurian government had fought a war a decade before with the breakaway Concordat and battled on Mirfak, Mirfak and the other worlds that left the Concordat in the aftermath of the Jihad were effectively ignored in favour of reinforcing the narrow salient securing the Pleiades Cluster.[30] After an indeterminate period as an independent system Mirfak joined the Calderon Protectorate.[31]
