Orestes has four continents, Clytemnestra where the capital city Agamemnon is located, Tantalus, Niobe and Telemachus.[2]

Orestes was captured in the opening wave of Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, the major Lyran Commonwealth offensive of the Fourth Succession War,[22] by the Third Donegal Guards and Fourth Lyran Regulars.[47]

The planet was a key world in the Free Rasalhague Republic. The world is quiet and unassuming, except for the massive rainforests that circle the equator. Here trees that tower more than 500 meters tall block out the sun, creating a mood of perpetual twilight at the forest floor. This dim environment allows the Orestes viper lizard to thrive as packs of thirty or more of the four-meter long carnivores attack any prey they can find. Hunting them down and preventing them from attacking farmers and factory workers who live near the forest is a full-time job for many people.[1]

During the Clan Invasion Orestes was one of the few Rasalhague worlds not overrun. The invasion displaced many Lyran, Rasalhaguian, and Draconian citizens, and many of them relocated to Orestes. When ComStar pledged to defend the world, it created a booming economy. Unfortunately many of the jobs that were created went to the newly arrived refugees instead of native Orestians. The higher pay and standard of living these newly-employed arrivals enjoyed created a great deal of resentment in the long-time inhabitants of the world. The problem was exacerbated by the rampant corruption in local government caused by the booming economy. Several dissidents called for Ragnar Magnusson to return and take over the world. The resentment boiled over during the Jihad when the Word of Blake raided the world and the ComGuards were unable to prevent it. Several neighborhoods predominately made up of Lyran and Combine citizens were the sites of firebombings and riots. This in turn caused the economy to stall and led to more dissatisfaction.[1]

It was in the ComStar command post on Orestes that Primus Sharilar Mori was assassinated by disaffected members of the ComStar ROM, including the ROM head Victoria Parrdeau, on the 26th of October 3068.[48] Just five days after the assassination of Sharilar Mori the Word of Blake launched an assault on Orestes. While the exact number of attackers isn't known, the Blakist force included at least one WarShip, a division of Word troops and an unidentified contingent of mercenaries; the Blakists fought savagely for a week, finally being routed on the 7th of November having mauled the 104th Division and the 1st Tyr Regiment and inflicted heavy damage on the Dante-class CSV Bordeaux, one of the few WarShips left in service with ComStar after the disastrous Case White.[48]

It was on Orestes on the 21st of August 3070 that Ragnar Magnusson spoke to the Free Rasalhague Republic government on behalf of Clan Ghost Bear and the Ghost Bear Dominion, beginning a series of negotiations to create an accord that would cover "all Rasalhagian peoples."[49] Clan Ghost Bear arrived in 3070 and quietly assumed control of the world with the blessing of the population. The economy began to recover shortly thereafter, and by 3079 the economy and rebuilding effort was years ahead of Merchant caste predictions.[1]
