Piedmont was targeted for early colonization after surveyors discovered six continents nearly covered in forests and jungles. Two other continents held massive amounts of easily accessible mineral ores, while three other continents were well-suited to growing Terran crops and food animals. Furthermore, the native fauna was easily digested by humans.[1]

Unfortunately things took a dramatic turn for the worse when a disease derived from a native bacteria swept the world. Chungalomeningitis, named for the city where it first appeared, spread via casual contact and was also able to use airborne vectors. Eventually a vaccine was found, but by then nearly two thousand people had felt the fever, palsy, and severe brain damage. Hundreds more had died. During the Star League the Combine established the Piedmont Institute for Disease Control in an effort to find a permanent cure.[1]

During the Amaris Civil War, Rim Worlds Republic troops raided the Piedmont Institute and stole the research samples kept there. Their plan was to use these samples as the basis for new biological weapons. The DCMS garrison made every effort to recapture the samples but the Rim Worlds forces opened one of the canisters to end the conflict. The mutated strain swept across the island continent of Cobayne, infecting everyone and quickly destroying the population. To prevent further infection, the DCMS unit called for a series of nuclear strikes on their own position, destroying both themselves, the Rim World troops, the infected population, and the mutated virus. Even three hundred years after that strike, the island remained a hot zone unable to support any life.[1]
