Richard Appleton was the commanding officer of the First Free Worlds Guards during the Reunification War.[1]

History[edit]

Colonel Appleton commanded the First Free Worlds Guards during a joint Free Worlds League/Capellan Confederation operation against the Capellan deserters Shepperton's Freebooters at the time of the Reunification War. When the rogues were tracked to Wisconsin in March 2588, Appleton's First Guards and the Confederation's Sheng's Chasseurs were dispatched to eliminate them. While the initial landings on 19 March went according to plan, the Chasseurs reckless assault on their erstwhile countrymen did not mesh well with Appleton's reserved approach. Despite these differences, the Freebooters lost both of their battalions while the allied forces only lost four lances.[1]

Problems arose when the matter of prisoner ownership was broached: the prisoners wanted to surrender themselves to the League, the Chasseurs commander laid claim to them as Capellan citizens, and Appleton stated that the Freebooters' crimes - having occurred solely in League space - made them subject to League jurisdiction. Eventually, with the mediation of Duchess Rhean Marik, half of the prisoners were sent to the League for two decades of imprisonment while the other half were given to the Confederation in order to be beheaded on Sian on 19 August 2588.[1]
