On orders of Colonel Quentin, Roderick was forced to fall back to a location that he felt was a bad tactical decision. He then disobeyed Quentin's orders to save the lives of his men. He later took the blame for his decision, without passing it to his commanding officer. The Military Court reduced him in rank from Hauptmann to Lieutenant. The general public sympathized with him, as anyone who followed the news knew the real story. His steadfast insistance on defending his people at the price of his reputation and career was considered by some the stuff of legend. Instead of profiting over the fame he gained from his court trial, he shunned it. This resulted in making him even more popular. After his court-martial, he was shunned by potential commanding officers.

Trillian was able to save Roderick from obscurity; she was able to get him to become a part of the invasion in addition for him to be allowed to create a new unit filled with soldiers that he got to hand pick.  He chose his soldiers from those who were not going to be given a second chance to redeem themselves.  Roderick regained his rank of Hauptmann and would lead his unit which he called the Broken Swords.

Roderick was assigned to Trillian Steiner, and he met with her in May, 3137. Trillian informed him that he would be taking command of a special unit that would carry out military operations for political reasons. He would answer directly to her as his commanding officer. Roderick insisted that he hand pick his people, mainly soldiers who needed "redemption" and would not necessarily be given a second chance. Roderick regained his rank of Hauptmann for his stint as the new unit commander.

Roderick would lead his forces against the 1st Tamarind Regulars and would be able to stay one step ahead of them until reinforcements arrived.  Reinforcements arrived in the form of the 3rd Lyran Regulars which had General Bernard Nordhoff attached to them who took command of all forces on world.  When the Marik forces on the world attacked en masse, Roderick and his unit were left to die.  This pushed Trillian to persuade Roderick to reveal his true family name in order to get the Lyran forces to follow him instead.  Following the reveal of who he is, he proceeds with an attack by deploying his forces via DropShip into the rear flank of the 1st Tamarind Regulars.  Seeing the attack, Nordhoff orders his battalions to link up with the 1st Steiner Strikers by piercing the center of the enemy.

The Broken Sword's first combat deployment was to the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey world of Labouchere in September of 3137. On Labourgiere, they faced a militia unit called Fangs of Marik. Roderick considered them a third-rate unit that anyone could defeat. Following the battle and eventual defeat of the Fangs, Roderick was given a silver laser pistol by the Fang's commanding officer as a sign of his unit's surrender.

Left as the ranking officer of the forces on world, Roderick takes command and orders all remaining units to refit before proceeding to Zanzibar, the capital of Tamarind. The city and the rest of the planet quickly surrender to the Lyrans, but not before Fontain Marik vows to continue fighting to free his people.

His unit then arrived on Millungera after receiving word from Trillian Steiner concerning his next operation. He met with her on 31st of October and she discussed her plans. She planned to meet with Duke Fontaine Marik to convince him to surrender and to have Roderick and his battalion arrive a few days later as a show of force. Feeling his dear cousin maybe getting into more trouble that she believed, he handed her the silver laser pistol that was given to him by the Fang's CO.

Roderick led his forces against Marik's 1st Tamarind Regulars Regiment on Harvison Flats near the Zanzidb river. There, the Broken Swords stayed ahead of the Regulars and Roderick kept his force intact long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Over the course of weeks of fighting, his cousin Trillian finally made her way to Roderick's unit after he was held up in a village his unit had captured.  By the 14th, Roderick's unit had been reduced to a shadow of its former self, his people exhausted.  However, after the fourth battle to defend the  village of Burkerville from Marik attack, Third Lyran Regulars arrived on world with General Bernard Nordhoff in command.  Marik forces, en masse, attacked the two battalions. When it became obvious that they were outnumbered, Trillian forced him to see the need to live up to his family name and to reveal that he is a Steiner so that the Lyran people, not Duke Vedet could win. Conceding to his cousin's logic, he rallied his people, revealing his Steiner heritage.  He then proceeded to launch an attack via DropShip on the 1st Tamarind's rear flank as they assaulted the 3rd Lyran Regulars.  Roderick ordered both his and Trillian's units to split the 1st Tamarind in two and destroy them. General Nordhoff, seeing he had been betrayed by Steiners, proceeds to his DropShip with his loyal people, and orders his battalions to link up with Broken Swords.

Roderick Steiner (b. 3115[1] - d. 3???) is the Lyran Commonwealth's General of the Armies and the staunchest ally to Archon Trillian Steiner.

Character History

Early Life

Grew up in the palace on Tharkad due to his mother dieing when he was still young and his father being on constant deployments. While growing up in the palace, he was in the constant presence of his cousins Melissa Steiner and Trillian Steiner which made him form a close personal bond with each of them.[1]

When Archon Adam Steiner passed away in 3121, Roderick grieved for his grandfather. The bond that Roderick shared with Adam was so special, that Roderick decided to follow in his father's footsteps by putting aside the name of Steiner for the name of Frost in order to carve out his own future without the pressure of living up to the Steiner name.[1]

Roderick Frost

As Roderick Frost, he was able to graduate from the Buena War College in 3135 and was assed to the Lyran Rangers as a Hauptmann.[2] While serving with the rangers, he nearly destroyed his military career during a skirmish against the Jade Falcons.[1]

Jade Falcon Attack

In April 3136, the Rangers were participating in a joint military exercise with the Republican Armed Forces on the world of Algorab. While they were training together, an expeditionary from Clan Jade Falcon Occupation Zone invaded.

During the defense of the world, Roderick was under orders from his commanding officer to fall back to a location which Roderick felt was a bad tactical decision. He chose to disobey the orders he was given and decided to instead issue orders that would save the lives of his men. Once the Falcon threat diminished, the Military Court reduced his rank from Hauptmann to Lieutenant. Though in the eyes of the public, and anyone else that followed his story, they all sympathized with him and his decision of saving his soldiers. Roderick became popular after he sunned the fame that came with his court-martial, he became a legend when he insisted on defending his people over his reputation and career.

Operation HAMMERFALL

Trillian was able to save Roderick from obscurity; she was able to get him to become a part of the invasion in addition for him to be allowed to create a new unit filled with soldiers that he got to hand pick. He chose his soldiers from those who were not going to be given a second chance to redeem themselves. Roderick regained his rank of Hauptmann and would lead his unit which he called the Broken Swords.

First Operation

The Sword's first combat deployment was to the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey world of Labouchere in September of 3137. They faced a militia unit which called themselves the "Fangs of Marik". Roderick considered them a third-rate unit that any force could easily defeat, which Roderick's men were able to accomplish giving them valuable combat experience.[citation needed]

Second Operation

Trillian's second operation for Roderick and his men was not for an invasion, but for a show of force in order to persuade Duke Fontaine Marik to surrender the Duchy. Once news broke on the world of Tamarind that the 1st Steiner Strikers were in orbit, Roderick receives a message from his cousin that states that the negotiation have failed. In order to protect his cousin, the battaltion sends its three Union class DropShips to land on the world: the Sandpiper, Archon's Pride, and the Rogue Star.[citation needed]

Seeing the attack, Nordhoff orders his battalions to link up with the 1st Steiner Strikers by piercing the center of the enemy.[3]

General of the Armies

After the death of Melissa Steiner and the rise of Trillian Steiner to the throne of the Commonwealth, Roderick was rewarded by being appointed General of the Armies. He has been steadfast in his devotion to the Archon, and his battlefield skills have served to stifle most of the criticism that Trillian has received. Roderick has been quick to stop any mutinous elements within the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces that may arise to prevent another coup d'etat that happened to his cousin Melissa.[1]
