Planetary History

Second Hidden War

Royal was one of the worlds engulfed in conflict during what became known variously as the Second Hidden War of the Star League era, also known as the War of Davion Succession. Following the launch of an offensive against the Federated Suns by the Draconis Combine, the AFFS had launched a counter-offensive against the Combine but quickly found itself being forced to retreat in the face of the much better prepared DCMS.[49]

With the war going badly for the Federated Suns, First Prince Joseph Davion took command of the military operations on Royal personally, taking to the field in his Marauder BattleMech; this led to his death at the battle for Baron's Harbor, when Davion's Marauder was crippled and immobilized. DCMS infantry forces captured the First Prince, pulling him from his cockpit, forcing him to kneel and then beheading him. The death of Joseph Davion led to the AFFS forces on Royal collapsing and quickly being pushed from Royal.[49]

Royal would remain in Combine hands until the Star League Defense Force launched Operation SMOTHER, the deployment of five Divisions of SLDF troops to restore order and separate the combatants. The SLDF Divisions were given authorization under the terms of the SLDF charter to do whatever was necessary to resolve the conflict; when the 160th BattleMech Division established a beachhead on Royal, the DCMS forces attempted to overrun the SLDF forces and push them off-world. The 160th resisted the Combine attack effectively, driving the DCMS troops back and then eventually offworld. Among those who received awards for gallantry during the battle of the beachhead was a young Captain Aleksandr Kerensky, the future Commanding General of the SLDF.[49]

First Succession War

Royal was invaded during the first half of the major invasion into the Federated Suns launched by the Draconis Combine in May 2787.[13] Royal was liberated by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns in 2815 as part of the third and final major AFFS counter-offensive of the First Succession War against the Draconis Combine.[14]

Fourth Succession War

Following the lull in major offensives in early 3029, a number of new offensives began as the Fourth Succession War entered its second year. In early July 3029 Coordinator Takashi Kurita moved to Irurzun from Luthien and took more of an interest in combat actions on the border between the Draconis Combine and Federated Suns than he had earlier in the war, where his attention had been almost completely focused on Wolf's Dragoons. Ten days after arriving on Irurzun Takashi had drafted and launched a new offensive aimed at securing more worlds from the Federated Suns, and Royal was one of those worlds. Attacked by the Second Amphigean Light Assault Group, the planetary militia on Royal were swiftly defeated as the DCMS inexorably annexed the Galtor Thumb region.[25] Royal was a landhold of House Stephenson, based on nearby New Ivaarsen. Although First Prince Hanse Davion would prevent Duke Paul Stephenson from using his New Ivaarsen Chasseurs to retake Royal in the wake of the Fourth Succession War, Duke Paul ensured that a steady volume of supplies and support for an underground movement against the Combine occupation. [50]

War of 3039

In the lead-up to the War of 3039, the AFFS High Command selected the Fuchida's Fusiliers mercenary unit to retake Royal. Seemingly a relatively easy mission, the mercenaries would later learn that things were much more complex behind the scenes.[51]

When Duke Paul received word his Chasseurs were preparing for action elsewhere, the Duke sent his son Leto Stephenson to accompany the Fusiliers as their liaison officer. Duke Paul then proceeded to recruit a battalions-worth of MechWarriors from both Chasseur regiments as well a regiment from New Ivaarsen's militia to create the New Ivaarsen Volunteers. Just before the Fusiliers jumped, Lete signaled his father, who immediately dispatched the Volunteers. As soon as they arrived on-world, Colonel Stephenson assumed direct command of the Royal invasion. With word of their Duke's son leading the invasion, almost the entire population of Royal rose up against the three Kurita conventional regiments stationed on-world. While suffering heavy losses, the people of Royal played a decisive role in ensuring Colonel Stephenson and his Volunteers ejected the Combine forces off-world in a mere five weeks. [51][50]

A mere footnote during the war, the fighting on Royal would be quickly overshadowed by a legal battle between House Stephenson and the Fusiliers, the mercenaries accusing Colonel Stephenson of overstepping his authority, ensuring they took the bulk of the losses while then assigning bulk of the battle salvage to his New Ivaarsen Volunteers. The people of Royal however saw Colonel Leto Stephenson as their liberator and hero and in response the people of Royal would accuse the Fusiliers of cowardice, word quickly spreading throughout the Draconis March. Though the mercenaries eventually received some degree of financial redress, the Fusiliers lost in the court of public opinion as their blackened reputation would force the AFFS to post them outside the Draconis March. While the tensions between House Stephenson and Fusiliers would lead to problems that would last until the mercenaries finally went rogue during the Clan Invasion, Leto's actions and reputation did ensure the Federated Suns were able to easily and rapidly bring Royal back into the government and trade system of the greater Davion realm.
