Rustin Lake was, as of 3067, a cadet at the Nellus Academy.

History[edit]

Rustin's parents were politicians. At Nellus, he focused on R&D, and weapons in particular. He also cooked, including for his boyfriend George Hawthorne.[1]

In October 3067, Rustin was part of a group of eight top Nellus Academy cadets sent on what was meant to be a straightforward voyage to Concord with General Gurald Eichner, in theory as a public relations event in honor of Nestor's new refueling station. Less openly, the cadets were meant to help detect a Lyran spy operating at the Nestor spaceport.[2] After setting off on the Requirement on 21 October, Eichner and the cadets ran into trouble: hijackers, the Lyran-hired Bloody Stoats, who came to capture the general.[3] Clashes between the cadets and the hijackers led to the DropShip crashing on Phobos, a planetoid in the Gienah system that held the Stoats' base. Fighting continued between the wreckage and the base, leading to multiple deaths, including the death of Rustin's boyfriend George. Eventually the cadets managed to call a League force in for evacuation.[4]

Rustin, during the clashes, broke into the noteputer of mercenary commander Deimos von Schetzle, revealing a range of intel. Most notably, he discovered plans for a Lyran invasion of Nestor.[5] He was also the one to hijack the Stoats' base's communications array and send a call for help.[6]

Rustin was one of four League survivors evacuated successfully, alongside three other cadets. As with the other survivors, he was to be given special honors and given a cover story to memorize and use; the League would attempt to control what was known about the incident.[7]

Description[edit]

Rustin was black and handsome.[1]
