Age of War

During the founding of the Capellan Confederation, the nascent nation was under heavy pressure from the Federated Suns, who were contesting or occupying border worlds along the shared spinward border. The Free Worlds League capitalized on this; as Chancellor Franco Liao worked to unify the various nations of the Capellan Zone, Free Worlds League units occupied a number of worlds on the Confederation's anti-spinward border. The first to be occupied were Berenson and Zion; Shiro soon followed, along with other water-rich worlds such as Andurien and Hassad. While Franco initially traded worlds for time, all of the worlds occupied by the Free Worlds League during these first few years would be contested for more than a decade, changing hands between the League and the Confederation numerous times.[5]

Dark Age

Pirates suspected of being CCAF units in disguise raided Shiro III in 3112, concentrating their efforts on the capital city, Shimagata, in an effort to draw the defenders of the nearby 'Mech factory away from their posts. The Shimagata militia repelled the pirates, in part due to the role played by a pair of the highly agile Stalking Spider II BattleMechs assigned to the militia; while the pirates were able to snatch some equipment from the factory, the militia salvaged enough material from fallen pirate units to recoup the loss in materiel.[38]

In 3139 forces from the Free Worlds raided Shiro III, which was a member of the independent Duchy of Andurien. The target of the raid was the Grumman Amalgamated plant, and the defending Andurien forces quickly pressed Lamprey Transport Helicopters into service, first by using their SRM launchers to ignite fires to channel and slow the League forces, and then to deploy battle armor squads in the rear area of the League echelons. With the infantry deployed, the Lampreys then engaged the League BattleMech forces, forcing one 'Mech to retreat and destroying a second despite taking several direct hits from heavy weapons.[34]
