Planetary Info

Tamarind is known across the Inner Sphere for the quality of its artwork. Many artists start on Tamarind and charge a premium for their artworks, leaving many native Tarmarindians out in the cold. Tamarind's focus on art and its production was the result of the many raids and combat engagements that took place on the world. These fights destroyed most of the world's industrial capability and damaged their food production. As a result, Tamarind is a world that was once beautiful, but by 3025 it was covered by pockmarks, craters, and destroyed forests, leaving little original beauty behind.[1]

Tamarind's capital city is Zanzibar. The area near the capital city is mainly desert that is rich in oil reserves. The river of Zanzibar runs through the city and into the desert near the sandy dunes of Harvison Flats. The planet has two continents, Moan and Dhofar.[2]

Padaron City maintains a large assortment of art museums that hold many of the planet's inhabitants greatest works.[50]

Planetary History

Star League

In the final years of the Star League, Tamarind was the headquarters of the XLI Corps (Star League) of the Star League Defense Forces.[51]

Tamarind experienced multiple pirate attacks prior to the fall of the Star League like many worlds. But, unlike many, the main target of these attacks were the art museums and collections of priceless works of art on world. One of these attacks resulted in the destruction of an entire wing of a major museum and the deaths of over a hundred civilians.[52]

The Jihad

During and immediately after the Jihad, Tamarind was the only BattleMech manufacturing site in the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey - although, given the lack of local military manufacturing, the BattleMechs produced were all RetroTech models.[53] Graham-Davis Enterprises also expanded into a new niche in the military-industrial market in the late 3080s with the introduction of the Patron PatrolMech.[54]

During the Jihad, the Vankateswara BattleMech Refit Facility produced the Icarus, Trooper, and Rook RetroTech designs. The plant was shut down by 3079 however.[55]

Tamarind is the capital world of the Tamarind District. It is also the only industrial system remaining in the district, with the Brett-Marik family looking to increase the industrial capacity of the planet.[2]

The Dark Age

During the Fourth Battle of Tamarind the Duke of Tamarind, Fontaine Marik, established a volunteer platoon to infiltrate the city of Zanzibar a week prior to the final assault on the city by the reformed Free Worlds League Military. These volunteers referred to themselves as the Hombres Locos after a street gang from Gibraltar, and successfully infiltrated the city, evading the patrols from the Eleventh Lyran Guards and others. Once entrenched in the city the Hombres Locos received aid from local guerrillas, who helped them identify a key command post belonging to the Eleventh Guards as well as assistance in evading local patrols.[56]

The Hombres Locos managed to smuggle a number of Leonidas battle armor suits into Zanzibar via the sewers and took up station inside a store near the target headquarters. When H-Hour for the FWLM assault on Zanzibar began the Hombres Locos swiftly attacked and destroyed the HQ, depriving an infantry regiment of its command staff before spending the next few hours using TAG systems to designate targets for Tamarind artillery. When the Hombres Locos were found and confronted by a lance of Lyran Guard 'Mechs, the battle armor equipped command squad ambushed the Lyran 'Mechs, damaging two and buying enough time for the rest of the Hombres Locos to escape.[56]

The mercenary unit Rocinha's Caballeros was also involved in this battle. The unit made use of their Winterhawk transports on the Harvison Flats to bedevil elements of the Second Buena Guards. They used their Winterhawks to deploy the Caballeros infantry in the rare natural strong-points along the route of the Guards' retreat to Zanzibar. When the conventional elements of the Guards deployed to assault, the Winterhawks would return and evacuate the mercenary troops. Such efforts stalled the retreat of the Guards and allowed the Eighth Tamarind Regulars to cut off part of their conventional forces.[57]
