Unit Insignia

The Taurian Guards insignia is a planet surrounded by a ring of five point stars on a red field.[1] The Guards typically paint their assigned equipment brown with red and gold accents.[2]

History

The Taurian Guards were created by combining several senior Regiments that had been decimated by the fighting during the Reunification War against the Star League in the later part of the twenty-sixth century. Originally organized as a Battalion, the Guards saw action against SLDF forces led by Aleksandr Kerensky on the planet New Vandenberg in the late 2760's.[1]

In 2765 they were stationed on Taurus and guarded the Calderon family, the Protector, and the Concordat Privy Council. Four extra lances of 'Mechs provided this protection, and the Guards frequently cross-trained with the other units of the Taurian Guard Corps to provide experience and maintain a high readiness level. The cooperation between the Guards and the other members of the Guard Corps rivalled that of the SLDF's special forces commands.[3]

One of the most celebrated Regiments in the Taurian Defense Force, the Taurian Guards have been awarded seven Taurian Brands. The first of these awards was given in the fighting against House Liao forces on the world of Mendham. During this campaign the Guard counterattacked the Capellan forces, thereby saving the civilian population of the planet from being massacred in a pogrom that was planned to suppress the rebellious local population. It was for these actions that the unit survivors received the coveted Mendham Brand.[2]

Historically a trusted and loyal TDF Regiment, the Guards fell out of favor with the Taurian government. Protector Grover Shraplen has little trust for the Guards since the actions of the former commanding officer and Marshal of the Taurian Guards Regiment and Corps, Brenda Calderon. Her resignation has caused mass dissatisfaction within the Guards as a whole, giving the public perception of a unit unwilling to live up to their grand history and consequently living down to Shraplen's lowered expectations.[2]

In 3067 DeMaestri's Sluggers found their way through the Pleiades Cluster and raided Taurus. They inflicted heavy damage before the Guards stopped them.[4] The Taurian Guards then led a counterattack into the Capellan March, but were eventually repelled. During the fighting, the Guards absorbed the survivors of the Hyades Light Infantry.[5]

By 3079 the Taurian Guards were deployed across Horsham and Robsart and had lost more than a third of their combat strength;[6] this would only get worse, and it was reported that as a result of the combat seen during the extended war with the Federated Suns and then in Operation MATADOR the Taurian Guards had been reduced to less than a quarter of their established strength by mid-3081.[7] The Guards lost most of a battalion on Horsham to the 4th Ceti Hussars, and another was pushed off Robsart after only a month of fighting. Many of the attached infantry units were left behind to delay the AFFS, leading to extreme losses in that branch. In addition, the two battalions that fought on Horsham and Robsart only escaped with approximately a company of 'Mechs. Losses suffered by the aerospace and armor forces attached to the Guards were similar. In 3085 the Guards were on Taurus to rebuild.[8]

In 3145 the Taurian Guards were stationed on Taurus, as they had been since the end of the Jihad. Their long garrison left their skills below the traditional level, but experienced officers kept them from being totally ineffective.[9]

Officers

As of 3025 the commanding officer was Colonel Brenda Calderon.[10]

From 3050 to 3054 the commanding officer was Colonel Samantha McGrinn.[11][12]

From 3058 to 3064 the commanding officer was Colonel Arthur Hedstrom.[13][2]

As of 3067 the commanding officer was Colonel Lee "T-Bolt" Smith.[14]

As of 3085 the commanding officer was Colonel Yvo Aliprandi.[15]

In 3145 the commanding officer is Colonel Mildred Webber.[16]

Tactics

The Taurian Guards prefer older, more robust technologies rather than newer more fragile designs when choosing their equipment. First Battalion specializes in urban warfare and the Guard overall is one of the heaviest units of the TDF. One of their assets is the inclusion of a company of coveted Assault BattleMechs in their TOE[2]. The discrete Battalions of the Taurian Guards are often assigned to border patrol duties outside of the core worlds of the Hyades Cluster. This allows the Guards to see action and maintain their high combat experience while allowing more junior units to rotate to less contested regions for rest and refit.[1]
