Thor's Hammers were a mercenary unit with a notable emphasis on artillery.

History[edit]

Thor's Hammers were formed from the survivors of the 12th Star Guards mercenary unit. The original Twelfth was destroyed in combat with Clan Wolf. However, a single Fortress-class DropShip, the Gunner's Daughter, escaped, rejoining the Twelfth's JumpShips. As they returned to Lyran Commonwealth space they discovered that the rest of the Twelfth had been destroyed.[1]

Though some of the survivors wanted to retain the Twelfth Star Guards name, the only surviving officer, Captain Napoleon Hobart, felt that too much had been lost to the Clans. Instead they formed a new mercenary unit based around their only active combat element: artillery. They announced their availability on Outreach shortly before the Truce of Tukayyid.[1]

Their early contracts found them working quickly and effectively, building a reputation for accuracy and destruction. While employed by the St. Ives Compact they slowed the Capellan Confederation's attack on Brighton to a crawl with heavy artillery strikes. Soon after their contract with St. Ives expired, they received a contract offer from the Confederation.[1]

With the dissolution of the Second Star League the Hammers supported LCAF forces on McAffe and Sheridan. They remained on Sheridan until the Free Worlds League counterattacked in late 3068.[1]

The unit is mentioned as the first recipient of the Helepolis ArtilleryMech after VEST restarted that lost design's production on Solaris VII[2] in 3074.[3]

As of 31 January 3075[4] Thor's Hammers were stationed on Zanderij in support of their fellow mercenaries in the Tooth of Ymir and Greenburg's Godzillas where they performed superbly against Clan Jade Falcon's Iota Galaxy. At this time, Thor's Hammers counted Captain Gustav Colt of the now-defunct 12th Star Guards among their roster, a veteran artilleryman in command of collection of artillery-armed 'Mechs nicknamed "Hobart's Funnies" which were described as the commanding officer latest experiment.[2]

As of 31 October 3085 Thor's Hammers were listed as a D-rated battalion-sized unit of regular experience and reliable loyalty, in Lyran Commonwealth employ and stationed on Arc-Royal. Their nominal strength was given as 85%, with a 57% upgrade rating.[5]

As of 31 December 3145 the unit was stationed on Medellin.[6]

Scouts, recon vehicles, spotter aircraft, and ammunition carriers accompany each Battery.

Each Battery has an anti-aircraft lance consisting of two light 'Mechs to act as spotters, while the remaining two are Rifleman or JagerMech designs.[1]

Notes[edit]

  • "Hobart's Funnies" is probably an homage to the various engineering, breaching, amphibious and other specialized tank variants operated by the British 79th Armoured Division during World War II, nicknamed "Hobart's Funnies" after their commander, Major General Percy Hobart.
