The Tooth of Ymir is a mercenary unit famous for their activities in the Chaos March.

History

Foundation

The unit was founded in 2929.

Third Succession War

In 3025 the unit was stationed on Wheel under contract from the DCMS.[1]

Fourth Succession War

At the start of the Fourth Succession War, the command was employed by the Draconis Combine. They were relocated to Wheel and had only marginal conventional support assets (10 militia regiments) after the regular troops were shifted to Luthien for an investigation about the bombing of the capital. The LCAF high command selected Wheel as a target during Operation Götterdämmerung. Two seasoned mercenary commands (the 1st Narhal's Raiders and Hansen's Roughriders) were tasked to capture the world for the Lyran Commonwealth. The commander of the Tooth asked the invading units to fight the battles only with BattleMechs, which, in response, accepted the challenge. The fight continued over seventy-two hours, and with the encirclement of the defenders a cease fire was held. The Tooth of Ymir retreated off world.[2][3]

The Andurien Secession

Under the pay of the Duchy of Andurien and under the command of Colonel Heller, elements of the unit attacked and seized the Capellan worlds of Primus and Prix on 13 September 3030. These were some of the first engagements of the war and were meant to shock the CCAF. The invasions encountered little resistance and there were no significant battles.[4]

After these small operations were completed with little losses, the unit was moved to reinforce Andurien forces on the world of Betelgeuse against Warrior House Kamata on 9 February 3031. The mercenary unit quickly pushed the Warrior House forces back and seized a large piece of planetary real estate, however, they were unable to land a killing blow against the Capellan defenders. The Duchy of Andurien continued to build up forces on Betelgeuse in an effort to complete its conquest. In early 3032, many believed that fighting would soon end after nearly three years of conflict because so much force was being brought to bear. However, on 9 May 3032, all five regiments of the McCarron's Armored Cavalry attacked. By 23 May that same year, no Andurien forces, including the Tooth of Ymir, were left on the planet as they had fled with significant losses.[4]

The Tooth of Ymir then moved to the world of Andurien for rest and refit after their escape. They sat out the next few years of the Secession until called upon in 3037 to assist Duchy forces on Xanthe III. Initially, the arrival of the mercenaries pushed the odds in the favor of Andurien forces. However, these hopes were quickly dashed as enough FWLM units soon arrived to gain a permanent advantage. After a bloody last stand at New Barstow, the unit headed to Outreach as their contract was up and Colonel Heller had been killed during their escape. Their new leader, Colonel Susan Shadwell, rejected all offers about continuing their employment with the Duchy of Andurien, and the unit sat out the rest of the Secession.[4]

Chaos March

The command found employment for the next two decades with their former enemies the Capellan Confederation[5][6], where they defended three planets at the same time. Because of this, some of those elements formed their own mercenary unit, Kingston's Killers[7]. With the increased hostility at the FedCom border Operation GUERRERO was started. The unit was teamed up with Stapleton's Grenadiers to retake Sarna from the Federated Commonwealth. The planetary defenders (Grim Determination, the Kaifeng SMM and the 1st Battalion of the Sarna Martial Academy Cadre) outnumbered the invaders and, with the air superiority on their side, the Capellans had a difficult time. The Grenadiers suffered serious losses during the fight and had no other choice than to abandon the planet. The remaining mercenary command tried to hold the advancing defenders but were surrounded. The Tooth surrendered to the planetary government. They offered them a new contract. The leader of the Tooth accepted. The command was now tasked to liberate nearby Sakhalin from the Capellans. Sakhalin was defended by three companies from Kingston's Legionnaires, but with their superior numbers the Sarna units defeated the Capellans in short time. The Legionnaires retreated back to Capellan space.[8]

Jihad

The Tooth came under fire from friendly ComStar forces on Epsilon Indi in the early confusion of the Jihad; no proof could later be found that they had intended to turn on their employers. The battered unit wisely surrendered. Having lost the strength stipulated by their contract, they then reportedly terminated it and headed to Arc-Royal to rebuild. The unit was rebuilt by specialty salvage group Skibinski's Salvage. Grand Duke Morgan Kell sent the rebuilt unit to Zanderij in 3070. In June the unit faced Clan Jade Falcon's 305th Assault Cluster on the world of Morges. The unit battled the Falcon Cluster for nearly two months until the unexpected arrival of a Clan Steel Viper Cluster. The Falcons, after losing their leader in an earlier engagement with the Tooth, left the world. The "Steel Vipers" turned out to be mercenary unit Greenburg's Godzillas, the Tooth's reinforcements.[9]

The Jade Falcons would attack Zanderij again in 3074 or very early 3075; this time, forces from Iota Galaxy landed on Zanderij, only to find themselves engaging the Godzillas, the Tooth of Ymir and the Thor's Hammers. The Thor's Hammers mercenary unit, commanded by Major Napoleon Hobart, had recently taken receipt of a battery of newly-manufactured Helepolis 'Mechs which had been organized into a battery of Artillery 'Mechs commanded by Captain Gustav Colt. Colt was a veteran artilleryman from the 12th Star Guards, a multi-regiment mercenary unit destroyed during the initial Clan invasion. Colt and the motley collection of 'Mechs armed with artillery weapons known as "Hobart's Funnies" proved hugely effective against the Jade Falcon forces, pinning Iota Galaxy down with a constant artillery barrage and preventing the Falcon forces from breaking out of their initial landing zone. The Jade Falcons attempted to remove Colt's forces by launching a head-hunting attack using Elementals, only to discover that the Hammers had predicted the attack and screened the Funnies extensively with conventional forces; the Elementals were wiped out by the Hammers, leaving the surviving elements of Iota Galaxy little option but to withdraw.[10]

In December 3075 Arch-Duke Morgan Kell deployed the Tooth of Ymir and the Knights of St. Cameron to Galatea following a call for reinforcements from Precentor Louisa Draga, the commanding officer of the Com Guard Seventy-ninth Division; the Seventy-ninth Division was fighting alongside the 103rd Division and the First Skye Jaegers as a part of the allied coalition, and were attempting to recapture Galatea from the Eleventh Word of Blake Militia, but the campaign had bogged down and Precentor Styven Kimmelry, the commanding officer of the 103rd, had just been killed in a Blakist "Headhunter" attack.[11]

The two main Blakist strengths on Galatea were based around Paphos and Pygmalion, both of which were under siege from allied coalition forces. Taking advantage of the arrival of the Knights and the Tooth of Ymir, Draga pulled the Seventy-ninth away from Paphos, leaving the Skye Jaegers to block attempts by the Blakists there to break out or reinforce their compatriots at Pygmalion; Draga then led the Seventh-ninth and both mercenary units in an extended, three-day attack on the Blakists at Pygmalion, which represented the largest single group of Blakist forces left on Galatea. When the allied coalition finally cracked the defenses in January 3076 and began pouring into Blakist lines the defenders tried to break out and link up with the force and Paphos, but were blocked and crushed by the coalition forces; this prompted the Paphos contingent to break for their DropShips, fleeing and leaving Galatea to the allied coalition.[11][12][13]
