Vanja Matas was, as of 3134, a former Republic Armed Forces Lieutenant and the leader of the Free Eagles.[1]
History[edit]
Before forming the Free Eagles, Vanja Matas was a Lieutenant in the VII Triarii Protectors.[1]
On Avellaneda sometime after the Blackout, Matas attempted to intervene in a riot in the Rio Lento province and soon found himself under attack by the crowd. A local construction worker, Joey Zanfino, stepped in to protect him, and was himself knocked unconscious by falling brickwork. Zanfino claimed afterwards that when he came to, he saw the spirits of former Free Worlds League Captains-General declaring Matas 'the new Marik'.[1]
Sometime after the Avellaneda incident, Matas retired from the RAF. Claiming to be an illegitimate scion of the Mariks, he formed a group dedicated to reuniting a more democratic League with him as Captain-General. His Free Eagles won support from several powerful backers in former League states and gathered followers in the Republic. As Matas traveled to build support, Zanfino followed as his bodyguard.[1][2]
