Wasat
System Information
X:Y Coordinates-19.908 : -54.593[e]

The Wasat system was home to at least one habitable world and as at 3145 was located in the Augustine Alliance province of the Free Worlds League.[1][2]

System Description

The Wasat system is located near the Hall and Mandal systems.[3]

System History

The Wasat system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a system contested by both the Capellan Hegemony and the Free Worlds League during the early twenty-fourth century.[4]

Planetary History

Early History

Wasat was notionally a client state of the Capellan Hegemony prior to the war between the Hegemony and the Sarna Supremacy in the early twenty-fourth century, but in 2306 Prime Magnate Paula Aris of the Hegemony negotiated with the Free Worlds League to obtain military support for the war against the Supremacy in exchange for Capellan support for various League territorial campaigns. Much to the embarrassment of Aris and the Hegemony, the military aid provided by the League turned out to be little more than newly-trained militia units, and the League also proceeded to occupy both Wasat and the nearby world of Berenson with the intention of reclaiming both.[4]

Within a few years, the newly-created Terran Hegemony negotiated the Treaty of Geneva with the Free Worlds League, an agreement which saw the Terran Hegemony's military attentions focused elsewhere, and which also saw Director-General James McKenna repeatedly side with Free Worlds League claims over those of the various Capellan states. One of the first of these acts was the confirmation of the Free Worlds League's possession of Wasat.[6]

Amaris Civil War

During the height of the Star League Wasat had developed into a thriving world with a large population with a significant industrial output and was a fairly major world within the Terran Hegemony. In common with other such worlds across the Hegemony, the Star League Defense Force had built several Castles Brian across Wasat and there was still an SLDF garrison in place when Stefan Amaris launched his coup that began the Amaris Civil War on the 27th of December 2766.[13]

Amaris had detailed a substantial force of Rim Worlds Republic force to subdue Wasat, but the initial attacks on the 27th of December failed, leaving the SLDF forces still in control of the bulk of the Castles Brian and determined to resist. The Republican forces resorted to the extensive use of weapons of mass destruction to prepare the way for their ground assaults, and as a result the civilian population of Wasat suffered greatly, as did the local infrastructure. The exact death toll incurred in the Republican campaign isn't known, but estimates place it anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands killed during the months it took the Republican forces to assume control of Wasat.[13]

In 2783 the Free Worlds League annexed Wasat.[16]

Operation Guerrero

Wasat was invaded in the Free Worlds League's first wave of Operation GUERRERO by the Thirteenth Marik Militia, Fourth Oriente Hussars and Second Sirian Lancers. The defending Second Republican regiment lost control of the planet.[40]

The Jihad

The Blackhearts were stationed on Wasat during the opening stages of the Jihad. They faced the Word of Blake's Third Militia Division.[41] On the 28th of January 3071 the Blackhearts were in retreat when the Word of Black forces detonated a nuclear device in the capital city - apparently as an act of spite - resulting in the deaths of 30,000 civilians.[42]

Coalition forces invaded Wasat on the 10th of January 3077 as one of the first two worlds to be targeted during Operation SCOUR.[43] Attacked initially by Group II of the Free Worlds League task force under the command of Duke Leonard Stewart, the defenses on Wasat proved to be more robust and developed than originally expected. The 7th Pesht Regulars sustained heavy damage[44] and the Home Guard was nearly wiped out[45] during the initial attacks; as a result, the second in command of the Free Worlds League front, Khan Santin West of Clan Nova Cat brought Group III to Wasat to assist Group II. Group III was spearheaded by Clan Nova Cat's Alpha Galaxy with ComStar's 4th Army and the 20th Marik Militia in support. The Blakists on Wasat were unable to coordinate an effective defense against the combined strength of both Group II and Group III, and by the 4th of March 3077 Khan West was giving an interview on the liberation of Wasat to Nigel Holmgren of INN.[44]

The Dark Age

In 3136 Wasat was the site of a battle between elements of the Republic Armed Forces loyal to Exarch Jonah Levin and elements of the RAF loyal to the Republic Senate. The loyalist forces were elements of II Hastati Sentinels, who had been responding to the recall issued by the Exarch when he invoked the Fortress Republic plan, but who had missed their JumpShip home because they'd been helping the population fight off a pirate raid. The Senate forces were led by a Major Wainwright, and were apparently a battalion from one of the Trarii Protectors commands; Wainwright claimed that the Exarch had betrayed and abandoned the Republic of the Sphere, and that the only hope for the survival of the Republic was the Senate. Wainwright then dictated that any of the RAF personnel on Wasat who attempted to resist would be guilty of treason against the Senate - a dictate that led to an immediate response from both the members of II Hastati Sentinels and elements of the planetary militia, leading to a brutal firefight between the two factions. The details were reported on LinkNet in mid-February 3136.[46]
