As a consequence the [[DCMS]] had assigned the First Nightstalkers [[regiment]] to the defense of Basiliano, under the command of [[Colonel]] Lloyd McGavin. The Nightstalkers had a notorious reputation amongst the [[Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces]] because of the many raids on the Commonwealth the Nightstalkers had conducted, and when the Commonwealth and the [[Federated Suns]] launched the [[Fourth Succession War]] the [[LCAF]] regiments deployed to capture Basiliano were eager to inflict some payback on the Nightstalkers. Assigned to the invasion of Basiliano were two regiments of the [[Arcturan Guards]], the [[24th Arcturan Guards|Twenty-fourth]] and [[25th Arcturan Guards|Twenty-fifth]] along with the [[Blackhearts]] mercenary command. Despite their superior numbers the Lyran forces were outclassed by the Nightstalkers, although the Lightning Companies of the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth allowed the Lyran forces to keep the pressure on the Nightstalkers despite McGavin's efforts to outmaneuver the attackers. After three weeks the Nightstalkers finally ran out of room to maneuver near the city of Padua, after the Lightning Company from the Twenty-fourth managed to distract the Nightstalkers long enough for the Lightning Company from the Twenty-fifth to circle behind them; McGavin made the mistake of getting tied down with the two companies, allowing the heavier elements of the Twenty-fourth and the Blackhearts to encircle his command.
